Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso has thrown his support behind the decision of the Nigeria Democratic Congress to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria.
Speaking at the party’s national convention in Abuja on Saturday, Kwankwaso said the move aligns with the party’s power-sharing arrangement and reflects a commitment to fairness and balance.
“I support the decision to zone the presidential ticket to the South so that the region can complete its eight years. This is in line with the zoning process and party agreement,” he told delegates and party supporters at the gathering.
He also urged members of the party and Nigerians interested in the movement to begin mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general election.
“Please register now,” he appealed.
The endorsement came shortly after the NDC formally adopted a resolution reserving its 2027 presidential ticket for the South for a single four-year term.
The motion was moved during the convention by Afam Victor Ogene and later approved by party delegates.
National Chairman of the party, Moses Cleopas, said the arrangement was designed to maintain regional balance within the opposition coalition.
He added that the presidential ticket would return to the North in 2031 after the South completes its tenure.
The development is widely seen as strengthening the chances of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and other southern aspirants ahead of the party’s presidential primary.
The convention also ratified members of the party’s National Working Committee as opposition figures continue consultations and alliance talks ahead of the 2027 elections.
Meanwhile, Obi and Kwankwaso officially joined the NDC in Abuja, where both leaders called on party members to avoid internal crises and remain focused on national development.
Obi said the decision to join the party was driven by the need for a stable political platform free from persistent internal disputes.
