At least three people have been feared killed following a violent attack on Ochipu community in Bassa Local Government Area of Kogi State, a predominantly Igala settlement.
The attack was reportedly carried out by armed men suspected to be Fulani herders, who invaded the community in the early hours, unleashing violence that left residents in panic and forced many to flee their homes for safety.
Eyewitnesses from the area described the incident as sudden and brutal, stating that the attackers stormed the community and opened fire indiscriminately, targeting residents and causing widespread confusion. The assault reportedly resulted in the death of at least three individuals, while several others were said to have escaped with varying degrees of fear and distress.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the attack, explaining that the community was thrown into chaos as gunshots echoed across the area. According to the source, the attackers operated for some time before leaving the scene, leaving behind casualties and grieving families.
Disturbing video footage reportedly obtained from the scene showed the lifeless bodies of victims lying on the ground with visible injuries, while distraught relatives and community members were seen mourning and calling for help. The footage has since circulated, intensifying concerns over insecurity in the region.
As of the time of filing this report, the motive behind the attack had not been officially established, and authorities were yet to issue a comprehensive statement confirming the number of casualties or the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The attack adds to growing security concerns in Kogi State, which has witnessed recurring incidents of armed violence, kidnappings, and clashes in recent years. Rural communities, particularly in border and remote areas, have continued to report cases of armed attacks, often attributed to suspected criminal groups operating within forested regions.
Residents of Ochipu and surrounding communities have expressed deep fear over the latest development, calling on security agencies to urgently intervene and prevent further escalation of violence. Many locals are reportedly apprehensive about returning to their farms and daily activities due to the perceived threat of additional attacks.
Security experts have repeatedly warned that the persistence of such incidents highlights the need for stronger intelligence gathering, improved surveillance in rural areas, and faster response by security operatives. They argue that without sustained intervention, vulnerable communities may continue to face repeated attacks.
Meanwhile, tension remains high in the affected area as families mourn the deceased and community leaders seek clarity on the circumstances surrounding the incident. Some residents have begun relocating temporarily to safer locations within and outside the local government area.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation and detailed response from relevant security authorities were still ongoing at the time of this report.
