Tension gripped parts of Kwara State on Thursday after suspected armed men invaded a facility belonging to the Transmission Company of Nigeria and reportedly held workers hostage during a violent operation that disrupted activities at the power installation.

The attack, which has triggered fresh concerns over the safety of critical national infrastructure, reportedly occurred at the company’s 132kV transmission substation located within the state.

According to reports from local sources and eyewitness accounts, the gunmen stormed the facility unexpectedly, forcing workers and officials on duty into panic as they took control of sections of the premises for several hours.

Workers present during the incident were said to have been temporarily held hostage while the attackers carried out their operation, creating fear among staff members and nearby residents.

Although the exact number of workers affected had not been officially confirmed as of the time of filing this report, sources within the community disclosed that the incident caused significant anxiety within the area as residents feared the situation could escalate further.

The attack has once again highlighted growing concerns over insecurity in parts of Kwara State and the vulnerability of strategic government installations located in isolated environments.

Residents living close to the facility reportedly fled indoors after hearing gunshots and unusual movement around the transmission station during the invasion.

Community members said the development created confusion and fear, especially due to the increasing wave of violent attacks and kidnappings that have affected several communities in recent months.

Security personnel and relevant authorities were later mobilised to the area following distress alerts from workers and residents.

As of Thursday evening, authorities were still working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the invasion, including the motive behind the attack and whether any equipment or sensitive infrastructure was damaged during the operation.

Officials were also yet to provide detailed information on whether any arrests had been made in connection with the incident.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria plays a critical role in the country’s electricity sector by managing the transmission of power generated across Nigeria to distribution companies and national grid facilities.

Attacks on transmission infrastructure are often considered serious threats because of their potential impact on electricity supply, industrial operations and economic activities.

Power sector experts have repeatedly warned that insecurity around energy infrastructure could worsen electricity instability already affecting businesses and households across the country.

Analysts say transmission stations, substations and power installations located in remote areas have increasingly become vulnerable targets for criminal elements due to limited security coverage and difficult terrain.

The latest incident in Kwara comes amid rising security concerns in several parts of the North Central region, where communities have continued to battle cases of armed attacks, kidnappings and violent criminal activities.

In recent months, reports of abductions involving travellers, construction workers and local residents have become more frequent across parts of Kwara and neighbouring states.

Residents have repeatedly called on the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen surveillance around critical public facilities and improve rapid emergency response mechanisms.

Some community leaders expressed fears that continued attacks on strategic national assets could discourage investment and further weaken public confidence in infrastructure protection.

According to local accounts, workers trapped inside the facility during the incident experienced moments of fear and uncertainty before security interventions helped restore calm to the area.

While no official casualty figure had been released, residents described the invasion as one of the most alarming security incidents recorded around the community in recent times.

The incident has also renewed conversations around the need for stronger collaboration between host communities, security agencies and government institutions responsible for managing critical infrastructure.

Stakeholders in the electricity sector have consistently maintained that safeguarding transmission facilities should remain a national priority because any disruption within the system could affect power supply to several states and economic sectors.

Efforts to obtain official comments from security authorities and management of the Transmission Company of Nigeria were still ongoing as of press time.

Meanwhile, residents and workers in the affected area have appealed for increased deployment of security personnel around public utilities and strategic installations to prevent further attacks.

The situation has continued to attract attention across social and political circles, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the growing trend of attacks targeting government infrastructure and public institutions.

Security experts warn that unless stronger protective measures are implemented, criminal groups may continue to exploit isolated facilities and weak security presence in vulnerable communities.

Investigations into the incident are expected to continue as authorities work to identify those responsible and assess the full extent of the disruption caused by the attack.
