Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai is at the centre of fresh controversy after his son accused the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) of blocking access to his doctor and family while he remains in detention.
In a statement issued on Friday, Mohammed Bello alleged that ICPC officials prevented El-Rufai’s personal physician from seeing him at the agency’s detention facility, despite what he described as a court order granting unrestricted access for medical consultations.
According to him, the doctor arrived at about 3pm to review the results of recent medical tests conducted on the former governor but was turned back after officials reportedly insisted on written approval from the ICPC chairman.
The statement read in part that the action amounted to a violation of a court directive and a denial of El-Rufai’s right to proper medical attention while in custody.
Bello also claimed that El-Rufai’s wife, Aichatou, was refused entry to deliver food to him later in the evening, after officials allegedly said deliveries were not allowed beyond a specified time.
He described both incidents as an infringement on his father’s constitutional rights and an abuse of administrative procedure, insisting that no lawful detention should restrict access to healthcare or family support.
The family is now calling for full compliance with the court order, saying they will not accept any further restriction of El-Rufai’s rights while he remains in ICPC custody.
El-Rufai has been held by the ICPC since February 19 over allegations linked to financial misconduct during his tenure as governor of Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023
