ABUJA, NIGERIA – Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to prioritise competence, experience, and national capacity in selecting its presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku made the appeal while speaking on the need for credible leadership capable of addressing Nigeria’s pressing economic, security, and governance challenges.
He stressed that the choice of a presidential candidate should go beyond political ambition and focus on individuals with proven records in public administration and leadership.
Call For Strong Leadership
The former presidential candidate warned that Nigeria’s current challenges require leaders with deep understanding of governance, economic management, and national development planning.
He noted that political parties must take their candidate selection process seriously if they hope to offer Nigerians a viable alternative in future elections.
Atiku also emphasized the importance of internal democracy within political parties, urging the ADC to ensure a transparent and merit-based selection process.
Focus On National Challenges
He pointed to issues such as rising unemployment, inflation, insecurity, and declining public trust in governance as key areas that require urgent attention from any incoming administration.
According to him, only experienced and competent leadership can effectively manage the complexities facing the country.
ADC’s 2027 Strategic Positioning
The African Democratic Congress is expected to play a more active role in the 2027 elections as political realignments continue to shape Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
Political observers say Atiku’s comments reflect broader discussions within opposition circles about building a stronger coalition capable of challenging the ruling party.
Looking Ahead
As political preparations for 2027 gradually intensify, stakeholders are expected to increase consultations, alliances, and internal party restructuring.
Atiku’s statement adds to ongoing debates about leadership quality and the future direction of Nigeria’s political opposition ahead of the next election cycle.
