LAGOS, NIGERIA — Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that the second phase of the Lekki Deep Sea Port project will commence soon, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Lagos’ position as a leading maritime and commercial hub in West Africa.

Sanwo-Olu disclosed that plans for the expansion are already underway, noting that the next phase of development is expected to significantly increase the port’s operational capacity, improve trade efficiency, and enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in regional and international commerce.

The governor said the Lekki Deep Sea Port has continued to demonstrate its strategic importance since commencing operations, contributing to cargo handling, logistics services, and economic activities within Lagos and beyond. According to him, the project remains one of the most significant infrastructure investments aimed at transforming Nigeria’s maritime sector.

He explained that Phase Two of the development is designed to build on the successes recorded during the initial phase, with the objective of accommodating increased cargo volumes and supporting the growing demands of domestic and international trade.

Sanwo-Olu noted that Lagos remains committed to creating an enabling environment for investments and infrastructure development, stressing that the expansion of the port aligns with the state government’s broader economic agenda of promoting industrialization, job creation, and sustainable growth.

The governor further stated that the port has become a critical gateway for trade and investment in Nigeria, attracting local and foreign businesses seeking efficient access to regional and global markets. He added that the project is helping to position Lagos as a major logistics and shipping centre on the African continent.

Industry stakeholders believe the expansion could further reduce congestion at existing ports, improve supply chain efficiency, and increase Nigeria’s capacity to handle larger vessels. Analysts also say the development has the potential to stimulate economic activities across several sectors, including manufacturing, transportation, warehousing, and export services.

Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the state government will continue collaborating with investors, port operators, and federal agencies to ensure the successful implementation of the project. He described public-private partnerships as essential to achieving long-term infrastructure and economic development goals.

The governor also highlighted the broader impact of the Lekki corridor, noting that investments in roads, industrial zones, and related infrastructure around the port are expected to generate additional economic opportunities for residents and businesses.

Economic experts have identified the Lekki Deep Sea Port as a key component of Nigeria’s ambition to become a major maritime and trade destination in Africa. They argue that continued expansion of the facility could enhance export capacity, attract foreign direct investment, and strengthen the country’s role in regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

As preparations for Phase Two advance, stakeholders remain optimistic that the project will further consolidate Lagos’ reputation as West Africa’s premier maritime gateway while supporting national economic growth and trade development.
