LAGOS, Nigeria — Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a Brazil-based businessman at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos for importing 6.1 kilogrammes of liquid cocaine cleverly concealed in shirts and towels.

The suspect, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed pending further investigations, was intercepted during a routine screening of passengers on a flight from São Paulo, Brazil. NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Sunday, describing the seizure as one of the most ingenious concealment methods encountered by the agency in recent months.

According to Babafemi, the liquid cocaine was expertly soaked into fabric materials, including shirts and towels, then dried and packaged to avoid detection by scanners and sniffer dogs. The total weight of the illicit substance after extraction was confirmed to be 6.1 kilogrammes, with an estimated street value running into hundreds of millions of naira.

The NDLEA spokesperson revealed that the suspect had been under surveillance for several weeks following intelligence reports linking him to a跨国 drug trafficking syndicate operating between South America and Nigeria. He explained that the businessman had allegedly made multiple trips between Brazil and Nigeria in the past year, raising red flags among anti-narcotics officials.

Upon his arrival at the Lagos airport, the suspect was subjected to a thorough search, during which the drug-laden clothing items were discovered in his checked luggage. Preliminary laboratory tests confirmed the presence of cocaine, and the suspect reportedly admitted during interrogation that he was promised a substantial payment upon successful delivery of the consignment to a local contact.

The NDLEA has launched a full-scale investigation to identify and apprehend other members of the syndicate, both within Nigeria and abroad. Babafemi stated that the agency is collaborating with international partners, including anti-drug authorities in Brazil, to track the source of the cocaine and dismantle the smuggling network.

This latest seizure comes amid heightened efforts by the NDLEA to combat drug trafficking through Nigerian airports and seaports. The agency has recorded several high-profile arrests and confiscations in recent months, including interceptions of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and other illicit substances concealed in everything from shoe soles to industrial machinery.

NDLEA Chairman Brigadier General Buba Marwa (retired) has consistently warned that drug traffickers are becoming increasingly creative in their concealment methods, necessitating constant innovation and vigilance by anti-narcotic operatives. He commended the officers involved in the latest operation and reiterated the agency’s commitment to keeping Nigeria free of illicit drugs.

The arrested businessman is currently in NDLEA custody and will face charges under the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, which carries severe penalties including lengthy prison sentences upon conviction. The agency has declined to comment on whether the suspect has named any accomplices or local recipients of the consignment, citing ongoing investigations.

As the NDLEA continues its crackdown on drug trafficking, aviation authorities have also been urged to enhance security screening protocols for passengers and cargo originating from high-risk countries. Meanwhile, the Brazil-based businessman joins a growing list of traffickers who have fallen into the NDLEA’s net, serving as a warning that Nigeria’s borders remain inhospitable to the illicit drug trade.
