Amad Diallo Fires Ivory Coast to Dramatic World Cup Victory Over Ecuador with Last-Minute Winner

Ivory Coast launched their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in dramatic fashion after substitute Amad Diallo scored a stunning 90th-minute winner to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Ecuador in a tense Group E encounter.

The match appeared destined for a goalless draw until the Manchester United winger produced a decisive moment of quality in the closing seconds of normal time, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Ivorian players and supporters inside a packed stadium in Philadelphia.

Diallo’s late intervention handed the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations champions a priceless three points and placed them level on points with Germany at the top of Group E after the Europeans’ emphatic victory over Curaçao earlier in the tournament.

For Ecuador, however, the result was a painful setback. The South American side entered the match carrying an impressive 19-match unbeaten run but were left devastated after failing to convert several excellent opportunities before conceding at the death.

Ecuador Dominate Early Exchanges

Ecuador began the contest with confidence and intensity, taking control of possession and creating the better opportunities during the opening half hour.

Their first warning arrived in the 11th minute when captain Enner Valencia found space inside the penalty area and fired over the crossbar. Although the move was later halted for the ball having gone out of play earlier in the build-up, it highlighted Ecuador’s attacking intent.

The closest Ecuador came to opening the scoring arrived in the 24th minute through John Yeboah. After capitalizing on hesitation in the Ivorian defence, the winger cut inside and curled a magnificent effort toward the top corner. The shot beat goalkeeper Yahia Fofana but crashed against the crossbar.

Just six minutes later Ecuador struck the woodwork again.

Pedro Vite delivered an excellent through ball that split the defence and found Alan Minda in a dangerous position inside the box. With only the goalkeeper to beat, Minda guided his effort goalward, but the ball rattled the crossbar for a second time, leaving Ecuador frustrated.

Those missed opportunities would ultimately prove costly.

Ivory Coast Gradually Find Their Rhythm

After surviving Ecuador’s early pressure, Ivory Coast slowly began to establish themselves in the contest.

Led by the energetic Yan Diomande and experienced Nicolas Pépé, the African champions started creating openings of their own. Their attacking play became more fluid as the first half progressed, though clear-cut chances remained limited.

Manager Emerse Faé’s side displayed patience and composure despite being second best during the opening stages. Defensively, they tightened their shape and reduced the spaces Ecuador had exploited so effectively earlier in the game.

The teams entered halftime level at 0-0, but momentum had begun to shift toward the Ivorians.

Wahi Hits the Crossbar

Ivory Coast emerged from the interval with renewed energy and nearly broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute.

Nicolas Pépé delivered a dangerous low cross into the six-yard area where Elye Wahi darted toward the near post. The striker connected well but could only lift his effort onto the crossbar, ensuring the deadlock remained intact.

The chance energized the African side and signaled a significant change in the balance of play.

Diallo Changes the Game

One of the major talking points before kickoff was the absence of Amad Diallo from the starting lineup.

The Manchester United winger had impressed during recent international appearances and many expected him to begin the match. Instead, he was introduced in the 56th minute in place of Bazoumana Touré.

The substitution immediately transformed Ivory Coast’s attack.

Diallo brought pace, creativity and direct running to the final third, forcing Ecuador’s defence into uncomfortable situations. His movement created additional space for teammates, while his willingness to take on defenders added a new dimension to the Ivorian attack.

Another substitute, Ange-Yoan Bonny, also contributed positively as Ivory Coast increased the pressure during the final stages.

Amad Delivers in the 90th Minute

The decisive moment arrived in the 90th minute.

Defender Wilfried Singo surged forward on a powerful run down the right flank after being repositioned at right-back. The defender drove into attacking territory before delivering a perfectly weighted square pass into the penalty area.

Arriving at precisely the right moment, Diallo met the pass with composure and precision, side-footing the ball beyond Ecuador goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez and into the net.

The goal sparked wild celebrations among the Ivorian squad as players rushed toward the corner flag to celebrate a dramatic winner.

90′ – Ivory Coast 1-0 Ecuador: Amad Diallo

It was a goal worthy of winning any match and a fitting reward for Ivory Coast’s persistence.

Tactical Analysis

Ecuador’s inability to capitalize on their dominant opening half hour ultimately proved decisive. Despite controlling possession and creating the clearer opportunities, they lacked the clinical finishing required at World Cup level.

Ivory Coast, by contrast, demonstrated patience and resilience. They absorbed pressure, adapted tactically and grew stronger as the game progressed.

The introduction of Diallo changed the rhythm of the contest and highlighted the depth available to coach Emerse Faé.

What the Result Means

The victory places Ivory Coast second in Group E on goal difference behind Germany, who defeated Curaçao 7-1 in their opening fixture.

With a crucial clash against Germany approaching, the Ivorians will carry confidence and momentum into one of the group’s biggest matches.

Ecuador now face enormous pressure heading into their next fixture against Curaçao, knowing another defeat could severely damage their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

For Ivory Coast, meanwhile, the tournament has begun in perfect fashion thanks to the heroics of Amad Diallo.

Final Score: Ivory Coast 1-0 Ecuador

Player of the Match: Amad Diallo

Group E Standings: Germany and Ivory Coast begin with three points, while Ecuador and Curaçao remain without a point.
