HOUSTON, United States — The Netherlands delivered a dominant 5-1 victory over Sweden in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group E clash at NRG Stadium on Friday, with Cody Gakpo and Brian Brobbey each scoring twice to announce the Dutch as serious title contenders.
The Oranje produced a devastating attacking display, racing to a three-goal lead within the first 30 minutes. Gakpo opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a composed finish after being played through by Frenkie de Jong, before Brobbey doubled the advantage ten minutes later with a powerful header from a Memphis Depay cross. Gakpo then added his second from the penalty spot just before the half-hour mark after Viktor Lindelof was judged to have handled the ball inside the area.
Sweden offered glimpses of a response, with Alexander Isak forcing a fine save from Bart Verbruggen midway through the first half, but the Dutch defence, marshalled by Virgil van Dijk, remained largely untroubled. The second half saw Depay add a fourth from close range in the 58th minute, capitalising on a defensive error, before substitute Robin van Persie—the 17-year-old son of legendary Dutch striker Robin van Persie—marked his World Cup debut with a smart finish after a one-two with Xavi Simons.
Emil Forsberg netted a consolation for Sweden in the 78th minute with a well-struck free-kick that flew past Verbruggen, but it was little more than a footnote on a night of Dutch dominance. The victory puts the Netherlands top of Group E after the opening round of matches, while Sweden face an uphill battle to qualify from the group.
Dutch coach Ronald Koeman praised his team’s clinical performance. “We were ruthless in front of goal and controlled the game from start to finish. This is the standard we must maintain,” he said. Sweden coach Janne Andersson admitted his side were outclassed, stating, “We made too many errors against a quality opponent. We need to regroup quickly.”
The Netherlands will face Denmark in their next group match, while Sweden will look to recover against Serbia in a must-win encounter.
