KADUNA, Nigeria — The Kaduna State Police Command has arraigned 24 suspects for allegedly killing a woman over child theft allegations in the Maraban Jos area of the state, police authorities have confirmed.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Mansir Hassan, the command’s Public Relations Officer, said the suspects were arraigned before a magistrate court sitting at NDA Junction, Kaduna. The suspects were charged with criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, and unlawful assembly, following an incident that sparked outrage in the community.

According to police sources, the victim was accused of child theft by members of the community, leading to a mob attack that resulted in her death. The suspects allegedly beat the woman before setting her ablaze, an act that has been widely condemned by human rights groups and civil society organisations.

The police spokesperson noted that the command was committed to ensuring that justice is served and urged members of the public to desist from taking the law into their own hands. He advised citizens to report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities rather than resorting to mob justice, which is illegal and punishable under Nigerian law.

The Magistrate Court remanded the suspects in prison custody pending further legal proceedings. The case has been adjourned to allow for proper investigation and legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The Kaduna State Government has also condemned the killing, calling on law enforcement agencies to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. The government reiterated its commitment to protecting the lives of all citizens, regardless of the circumstances.
