The Ogun State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the murder of retired Ogun State Television (OGTV) broadcaster, Madam Olakitan Oyesiku, and her security guard, Pelumi Adetayo.
Police authorities disclosed that the principal suspect, identified as a former employee of the deceased, allegedly confessed that the attack was carried out to “teach her a lesson.”
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Bode Ojajuni, revealed details of the arrests on Thursday during a press briefing at the Command Headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.
He also provided updates on the investigation, including the recovery of the victim’s vehicle, forensic analysis of a handwritten note reportedly left at the scene, and the apprehension of suspects linked to the crime.
According to Ojajuni, the police became aware of the incident on June 21, 2026, at about 4 p.m. following a report lodged at the Owode-Egba Police Station regarding unusual developments at the residence of Madam Oyesiku.
He explained that initial findings showed signs of forced entry, as the front door of the residence had been partially damaged, while the security post within the compound was found locked.
Detectives were subsequently dispatched to the location where the bodies of both victims were discovered.
“Police detectives were immediately mobilised to the scene. Upon gaining access to the premises, the lifeless body of Pelumi Adetayo, male, aged 38 years, the security guard, was discovered inside the security house, while the body of Madam Olakitan Oyesiku was found lying in a pool of blood within the living room of the main building,” the commissioner said.
Ojajuni stated that investigators processed the scene and established that the deceased’s Lexus RX 330 was missing from the compound, suggesting that robbery may have accompanied the killings.
The police command thereafter launched a comprehensive investigation involving intelligence gathering, technical tracking and coordinated operations aimed at identifying the perpetrators and recovering the stolen vehicle.
The effort paid off on June 22 when officers located and recovered the Lexus.
“Acting on credible intelligence and technical tracking analysis, operatives of the Command successfully traced and recovered the missing Lexus RX 330 vehicle belonging to the deceased on 22nd June, 2026,” Ojajuni said.
He noted that although the vehicle’s ignition key and number plates had been removed, detectives discovered the registration plate hidden beneath one of the seats, enabling them to confirm ownership.
The commissioner further revealed that investigators obtained a significant lead from a handwritten note allegedly abandoned by the suspects at the crime scene.
“One critical piece of evidence recovered from the scene was a handwritten note apparently left behind by the perpetrators. The note was subjected to forensic examination and analysis, which generated valuable investigative leads that significantly aided detectives in identifying and tracing those responsible for the crime,” he said.
Following days of intelligence-led operations, police arrested the principal suspect, 22-year-old Philip, on June 24 at a construction site in Ibara GRA, Abeokuta, where he was reportedly working as a labourer.
Subsequent operations led to the arrest of two additional suspects, identified as Ayoola, 27, and Obafunsho, 36.
Ojajuni said all individuals believed to have participated in the criminal conspiracy are now in police custody.
The commissioner disclosed that Philip allegedly confessed to involvement in the killing and implicated the two other suspects as accomplices.
“During interrogation, Philip made a confessional statement, admitting his involvement in the murder of Madam Olakitan Oyesiku.
He further disclosed that he had recruited Ayoola, male, aged 27 years, and Obafunsho, male, aged 36 years, to participate in the crime,” Ojajuni said.
According to the police commissioner, Philip claimed he planned the attack because of grievances stemming from the period he worked as a security guard for the deceased.
Ojajuni said the suspect admitted that the objective of the attack was to “teach her a lesson.”
Providing further details, the commissioner said the suspects allegedly carried out the operation on June 20, 2026, after overpowering the security guard and using him to gain access to the residence.
“The suspects carried out the act on Saturday, 20th June, 2026, in the afternoon. According to the statement, they first overpowered the security guard, Pelumi Adetayo, male, aged 38 years, and used him to gain access to the residence. Upon gaining entry, they attacked Madam Olakitan Oyesiku and subsequently murdered the security guard,” Ojajuni said.
Police said the suspects fled the premises with the Lexus RX 330 after allegedly killing both victims. The vehicle was later recovered in the Onikolobo area through intelligence-led and technical tracking operations.
Ojajuni also disclosed that investigators recovered several items believed to be connected to the crime during follow-up searches conducted after the suspects’ confessional statements.
“Following the suspects’ confessional statements, detectives conducted further searches at locations linked to them. During the operation, a broken hammer, a cutlass, a plank, a black pen, and other relevant exhibits connected to the investigation were recovered,” he stated.
The police command maintained that despite the confessions and evidence gathered so far, the suspects remain entitled to due process.
“The Ogun State Police Command wishes to emphasise that while the suspects have made useful statements and substantial evidence has been recovered in the course of the investigation, all suspects remain entitled to due process under the law. Investigation is ongoing to consolidate all available evidence and ensure diligent prosecution of all suspects connected with the crime,” he said.
Ojajuni assured the public that the command would pursue justice in the matter and ensure that all those involved face prosecution.
“The Command remains committed to ensuring that justice is served and that all persons connected with this heinous crime are brought to book,” the police commissioner said
