Erling Haaland Real Madrid Transfer: Romano Gives Definitive Answer After Father’s Comments

The future of Erling Haaland has once again become the dominant talking point of the summer transfer window after sensational comments from his father Alf-Inge Haaland reignited speculation linking the Manchester City phenomenon with a blockbuster move to Real Madrid to play under newly appointed head coach Jose Mourinho.

With Haaland currently spearheading Norway’s historic run to the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinals and fresh from scoring both goals in the famous 2-1 victory over Brazil that sent the five time world champions home, the timing of the rumours has only amplified their impact. Yet according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, supporters of both clubs should not expect a seismic switch in the coming weeks, even if the door to the Bernabeu remains open for the future.

The latest wave of speculation was triggered by Alf-Inge Haaland, the former Leeds United and Manchester City defender who also acts as a close advisor in his son’s career alongside agent Rafaela Pimenta. Speaking to DAZN ahead of Norway’s Round of 32 clash against Ivory Coast, the 53 year old was asked directly about long standing reports that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez views Haaland as the final piece of his next Galacticos project.

Alf-Inge did little to dampen the excitement in the Spanish capital. While reaffirming his son’s happiness in England, he openly acknowledged the unique pull of Los Blancos, a club his son idolized as a child due to his admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Real Madrid move? He’s very happy at Manchester City and has a long contract. We’re waiting for the new season but anyone would want to play for Madrid. You never know what can happen in football,” Alf-Inge said. The comments, brief but loaded, were immediately interpreted in Madrid as a green light, particularly given the new managerial context.

Real Madrid’s appointment of Jose Mourinho in June, marking a sensational return to the club thirteen years after his first spell ended in 2013, has fundamentally changed the club’s transfer strategy. Mourinho, who has signed a three year deal to succeed Carlo Ancelotti, has reportedly told Perez he wants a dominant number nine to complement Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior in a devastating front three that would evoke memories of his first Galacticos era. Haaland, with his lethal finishing, physical dominance and proven Champions League pedigree, sits at the very top of that wish list.

The prospect of Haaland joining Mourinho is particularly intriguing given their history. Mourinho famously tried to sign Haaland for Manchester United in December 2018 when the striker was still at Molde FK, before Haaland opted for Red Bull Salzburg to continue his development. The Portuguese coach has since described Haaland publicly as a monster and a player born to score goals for Real Madrid.

However, Fabrizio Romano has moved swiftly to clarify the situation and cool talk of an imminent transfer. Speaking on his official YouTube channel on July 6, Romano was emphatic that no deal is being negotiated for this summer and that Manchester City have no intention of selling their talisman.

“I am telling you Haaland to Real Madrid this summer, no. But Haaland to Real Madrid one day, who knows? Because Haaland is not excluding the possibility one day, again, not in the summer 2026 to go to Real Madrid. So it’s something that in the mind of Erling Haaland is considered as a possibility for the future. Again, I am not talking about this summer,” Romano explained.

Romano further detailed that Haaland remains central to City’s new project under Enzo Maresca, who has taken over following Pep Guardiola’s decision to step down at the end of last season to take a sabbatical.

Haaland signed a landmark contract extension in January 2025 that ties him to the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2034, making him the highest paid player in Premier League history with a deal worth in excess of 500,000 pounds per week including bonuses.

The contract does contain a release clause structure that decreases over time, but sources indicate it will not become active for foreign clubs until at least 2027 and is set at well over 150 million pounds.

“Again, Haaland is very happy at Man City. He’s a crucial player for City project, for City new coach Enzo Maresca, so the feeling is absolutely super positive between Haaland and City. But that’s the story for this case,” Romano concluded.

To understand why Real Madrid’s interest never truly fades, one must look at Haaland’s extraordinary background and roots. Born on July 21, 2000 in Leeds, England, where his father was playing in the Premier League, Haaland was raised in Bryne, Norway, a small town of just 12,000 people known for its farming community.

His originality lies in that unique blend of Norwegian humility, English birthplace and elite athletic genetics. His mother Gry Marita Braut was a national heptathlon champion, while his father Alf-Inge was a rugged Premier League defender, giving Erling a rare combination of power, speed and endurance from birth.

He began his career at his hometown club Bryne FK before moving to Molde FK under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who famously told his coaching staff that Haaland would become the best striker in the world. Spells at Red Bull Salzburg, where he scored 29 goals in 27 games, and Borussia Dortmund, where he netted 86 goals in 89 appearances, established him as Europe’s most feared young finisher before his 51 million pound move to Manchester City in 2022.

Since then he has broken almost every goalscoring record in England, winning two Premier League Golden Boots, a Champions League title and becoming the fastest player to reach 100 Premier League goals. His World Cup heroics in 2026, where he has six goals in four matches and single handedly eliminated Brazil, have only increased his market value and global appeal.

For now, Mourinho will have to wait. Real Madrid have already completed the signing of Denzel Dumfries for 20 million euros to strengthen at right back and are focused on selling players to balance Financial Fair Play. But with Florentino Perez dreaming of a front three of Mbappe, Vinicius and Haaland, and with Haaland himself refusing to close the door on the Bernabeu forever, the story of Erling Haaland and Real Madrid is far from over. It is simply on pause until 2027.
