Nigeria international and D’Tigers guard Eric Ayala is preparing to give back to the country’s basketball community by organizing a youth basketball development camp in Lagos, an initiative aimed at discovering and grooming the next generation of Nigerian basketball stars.

The camp, scheduled to hold later this month, is expected to bring together hundreds of young athletes from different parts of the country for an intensive programme focused on skill development, mentorship and character building.

As one of the newest faces in Nigeria’s senior men’s national basketball team, Ayala believes that creating opportunities for young players is one of the most effective ways to ensure the continued growth of basketball in the country.

The camp is designed to provide aspiring basketball players with access to quality coaching, modern training techniques and valuable life lessons from professionals who have competed at the highest level of the game.

Speaking ahead of the event, Ayala expressed his excitement about returning to Nigeria to connect with young basketball enthusiasts and inspire them to pursue their dreams with determination and discipline.

According to him, Nigeria possesses an abundance of basketball talent, but many gifted youngsters never receive the opportunities or exposure needed to unlock their full potential.

He explained that the objective of the programme goes beyond teaching basketball fundamentals.

Instead, the camp will focus on helping participants develop leadership qualities, teamwork, confidence, discipline and the mental toughness required to succeed both on and off the court.

Participants will undergo several days of structured training sessions covering shooting accuracy, ball handling, passing, defensive positioning, physical conditioning and game awareness.

Experienced coaches and former professional players are expected to assist in conducting the sessions, ensuring that attendees receive practical guidance based on international standards.

The organisers also plan to include motivational talks where young athletes will learn about overcoming challenges, maintaining academic excellence and balancing education with sporting ambitions.

Ayala believes these life lessons are just as important as technical basketball skills.

The D’Tigers star understands the importance of mentorship because he has experienced firsthand how guidance from coaches and senior players helped shape his own journey into professional basketball.

He hopes the camp will become a platform where talented Nigerian youngsters can discover opportunities that may eventually lead to scholarships, professional contracts and national team invitations.

Basketball continues to experience remarkable growth across Nigeria, especially among young people who increasingly view the sport as a pathway to education and international careers.

Over the years, Nigeria has produced several players who have excelled in the NBA, Europe and other top basketball leagues around the world.

Legends such as Hakeem Olajuwon paved the way for future generations, while players including Gabe Vincent, Precious Achiuwa, Josh Okogie, Al Farouq Aminu and several others have continued to strengthen Nigeria’s reputation on the global basketball stage.

Sports administrators believe grassroots initiatives like Ayala’s camp are essential if Nigeria hopes to remain one of Africa’s leading basketball nations.

Rather than relying solely on school competitions and local leagues, development camps expose young athletes to modern coaching methods while allowing scouts and national team officials to identify exceptional talent at an early stage.

The initiative has also received praise from basketball stakeholders who see it as another example of Nigerian athletes investing in the future of sports development.

Many former international players have repeatedly called on successful professionals to return home and support grassroots programmes capable of transforming local communities.

Ayala’s decision to organise the camp reflects that growing culture of giving back.

Beyond basketball instruction, organisers say participants will have opportunities to ask questions, interact with professional athletes and gain valuable insight into the sacrifices required to build successful sporting careers.

For many of the young players expected to attend, meeting an international basketball star could provide the motivation needed to continue pursuing their dreams despite limited resources and difficult circumstances.

The camp is also expected to strengthen the relationship between elite athletes and local communities by demonstrating that success at the highest level does not mean forgetting one’s roots.

Basketball analysts have described the programme as a welcome development, noting that countries with successful national teams consistently invest in youth development rather than focusing only on senior competitions.

Nigeria’s impressive performances in international basketball have often been built on talented players developed through similar grassroots initiatives.

Ayala hopes this year’s event will become an annual programme capable of producing future D’Tigers stars who can represent the country with distinction on the continental and global stage.

As anticipation builds, young basketball enthusiasts across Lagos are looking forward to a rare opportunity to train under the guidance of one of Nigeria’s rising international stars.

While only a few participants may eventually become professional players, the experience promises to equip every attendee with valuable skills, confidence and lifelong lessons that extend far beyond the basketball court.

For Ayala, the camp represents more than a sporting event. It is an investment in Nigeria’s future, a platform for inspiring dreams and another important step towards building a stronger foundation for basketball development across the country.
