Nigeria’s men’s national volleyball team has secured qualification for the 2026 African Volleyball Nations Cup after producing a spirited comeback to defeat Benin Republic 3-1 in the ongoing Zone 3 qualifying tournament in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The victory confirms Nigeria’s place at the continental championship, which will take place in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, from September 7 to 21.

The qualification marks another important milestone for Nigerian volleyball as the team continues its resurgence on the African stage. Having entered the tournament determined to return to the Nations Cup, the players responded with disciplined performances throughout the qualifiers, demonstrating resilience, teamwork and tactical maturity.

Nigeria’s decisive match against Benin Republic did not begin according to plan.

Benin started strongly, taking advantage of early nerves within the Nigerian side to claim the opening set 25-21. Their aggressive serving and organised defensive play unsettled Nigeria, forcing the team to chase the game for the first time in the competition.

However, the setback only seemed to motivate the Nigerian players.

The team returned for the second set with renewed determination, improving their attacking combinations and reducing unforced errors. Their efforts paid off as they levelled the contest by winning the set 25-21, restoring confidence and shifting the momentum firmly in their favour.

From that point onward, Nigeria took complete control of the encounter.

The third set showcased the team’s growing confidence, with powerful spikes, solid blocking and excellent communication helping them dominate Benin. Nigeria comfortably claimed the set 25-15, leaving their opponents struggling to respond to the increased intensity.

The fourth set followed a similar pattern.

Despite Benin’s determination to force a deciding fifth set, Nigeria maintained their composure during the crucial moments. The players continued to execute their game plan effectively before sealing a 25-20 victory that sparked celebrations among the coaching staff and supporters in Abidjan.

The triumph completed another impressive performance in what has been an outstanding qualifying campaign.

Before defeating Benin Republic, Nigeria had already announced themselves as serious contenders by recording convincing victories over other opponents, including a commanding straight sets win against hosts Côte d’Ivoire. Those performances ensured the team remained unbeaten heading into the decisive qualification match.

The qualification campaign has reflected months of careful preparation by the Nigeria Volleyball Federation and the technical crew, who assembled a balanced squad capable of competing against some of West Africa’s strongest volleyball nations.

Players have consistently displayed discipline, physical fitness and mental strength throughout the competition, qualities that will be essential when they compete against Africa’s elite teams in Kinshasa later this year.

The African Volleyball Nations Cup remains the continent’s premier volleyball competition, bringing together the best national teams to compete for continental honours and valuable ranking points. Participation also provides countries with opportunities to strengthen their international standing and prepare for future global competitions.

For Nigeria, qualification represents more than simply earning a place at another tournament.

It is another encouraging sign that volleyball is gradually regaining momentum within the country after years of inconsistent international performances. Administrators, coaches and former players have repeatedly emphasised the importance of investing in grassroots development and creating more opportunities for talented young athletes.

Recent improvements in domestic competitions, coaching programmes and youth development initiatives have started producing positive results, with the national team benefiting from a larger pool of skilled players.

Basketball and football may continue to dominate headlines in Nigeria, but volleyball has quietly continued its own development, with increasing participation in schools, universities and community sports programmes across the country.

The latest achievement is expected to inspire more young Nigerians to embrace the sport while encouraging further investment from both public and private stakeholders.

The Nigeria Volleyball Federation also deserves recognition for its efforts in preparing the team for the demanding qualification tournament. Careful planning, effective logistics and strong technical support played important roles in ensuring the players could focus entirely on their performances.

Attention will now shift towards preparations for the African Volleyball Nations Cup, where Nigeria will face stronger opposition from across the continent.

The coaching staff is expected to organise additional training camps and friendly matches to improve the team’s tactical organisation, physical conditioning and overall competitiveness before travelling to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Supporters will also hope the momentum built during the Zone 3 qualifiers can be carried into the continental championship.

Nigeria has shown throughout the tournament that it possesses the determination and quality needed to compete with Africa’s best, and expectations will be high as the team seeks to make a significant impact in Kinshasa.

For now, however, the players can celebrate a well deserved achievement.

Their comeback victory against Benin Republic not only secured qualification but also demonstrated the fighting spirit that has become the hallmark of this Nigerian side. If they continue to build on these performances, the future of Nigerian volleyball looks increasingly promising.
