The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has dismissed a formal complaint filed against FIFA President Gianni Infantino over allegations that he breached the Olympic movement’s political neutrality rules through his public association with United States President Donald Trump.
The decision brings an end, at least for now, to a controversy that attracted global attention during and after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with critics questioning whether the world’s most powerful football administrator had crossed the line between sports leadership and political endorsement. The IOC concluded that the complaint did not warrant further action under its ethics procedures, allowing Infantino to continue serving as an IOC member without disciplinary measures.
The complaint was submitted by international human rights organisation FairSquare, which argued that Infantino repeatedly violated the principle of political neutrality through his public appearances alongside President Trump and by openly praising his role in supporting FIFA initiatives. The group also questioned FIFA’s decision to introduce a Peace Prize and award its inaugural honour to Trump, claiming the move blurred the distinction between sport and politics.
FairSquare maintained that Infantino’s conduct was inconsistent with the ethical responsibilities expected of members of the International Olympic Committee. According to the organisation, the FIFA president’s actions risked undermining the independence and neutrality that international sporting institutions are expected to uphold.
The issue gained greater prominence during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Throughout the tournament, Infantino appeared alongside President Trump at several high profile events, including official ceremonies and promotional activities linked to the competition.
One of the biggest talking points came after Trump publicly claimed he had personally spoken with Infantino regarding the suspension of United States forward Folarin Balogun following a controversial red card. FIFA’s disciplinary committee later suspended the ban, a development that sparked criticism from several football officials and raised fresh questions about possible political influence in football governance.
Despite those concerns, the IOC’s Ethics Commission reviewed the submission and ultimately decided not to proceed with an investigation.
According to reports, Olympic officials determined that the complaint did not meet the threshold required for disciplinary proceedings under the IOC’s ethical framework. The committee therefore rejected the request for sanctions against the FIFA president.
