Former United States President Joe Biden’s prostate cancer has spread to other parts of his body and is causing him significant pain, his son, Hunter Biden, has disclosed.
Hunter made the disclosure during an emotional interview with the BBC on Friday while discussing his father’s health and the impact of the diagnosis on their family.
He said the cancer had metastasised to Biden’s bones and other parts of his body, describing the condition as painful and debilitating.
“The cancer has spread, metastasised into his bones and further. It’s very painful and it’s very debilitating in many respects,” Hunter said.
Biden, 83, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in May 2025, less than four months after leaving the White House.
His health and age were major issues during his presidency, particularly during his 2024 re-election campaign.
Concerns about his fitness for office intensified after his widely criticised debate performance against Donald Trump, eventually contributing to his decision to withdraw from the presidential race.
Hunter said his father’s illness had been difficult for the family to cope with, becoming emotional as he spoke about watching the former president deal with the disease.
“It’s really sad to watch,” he said. “The only thing that I’d say about my dad, about his health right now, is I wish he would complain more, because it’s not good.”
Despite his deteriorating health, Hunter said the former president remained active in public life and continued to speak about issues he considered important.
“He’s still doing his thing,” Hunter said. “He so believes in this country.”
Biden served as the 46th president of the United States from 2021 to 2025 and became the oldest person to serve as president in the country’s history.
His age and physical and mental fitness became subjects of intense political debate during his final years in office, with critics accusing his administration of downplaying the extent of his health challenges.
The Biden camp consistently defended his ability to perform his presidential duties.
The former president is also expected to release a memoir titled Promise Me, America after the 2026 midterm elections.
Hunter’s latest comments provide a new update on Biden’s condition as the former president continues to make public appearances and engage in political and social issues despite his ongoing treatment.
