Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing of Cameroon international Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion in a transfer package worth £70 million.
The highly rated midfielder has agreed personal terms with the Red Devils and is set to put pen to paper on a five year contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2031, with Manchester United also holding an option to extend the agreement for another season.
The transfer represents one of the biggest moves of the summer window and another major step in Manchester United’s attempt to rebuild their midfield with younger, physically powerful and technically gifted players.
According to reports, club to club documentation has been exchanged as the final stages of the transfer continue. The agreement with Brighton is worth £65 million guaranteed, with a further £5 million available in performance related add-ons, while Brighton have also secured a sell-on clause as part of the deal.
Baleba has already undergone the initial stages of his medical, with the remaining formalities expected to be completed before the transfer is officially announced.
Manchester United Finally Land Long Term Target
Baleba has been on Manchester United’s radar for an extended period. The club explored a potential move for the Cameroon midfielder previously, but Brighton’s valuation proved to be a major obstacle.
At one point, Brighton were believed to value the midfielder at more than £100 million, with reports indicating that the Seagulls had previously placed a valuation of around £115 million on their prized asset. United’s eventual agreement at £65 million guaranteed therefore represents a significant reduction from Brighton’s earlier asking price.
The 22 year old now becomes another important piece of United’s midfield reconstruction, following the arrivals of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos during the summer window.
Baleba’s arrival is expected to give United greater physicality, defensive protection and ball carrying ability in the middle of the pitch.
From Douala to the Premier League
Carlos Noom Quomah Baleba was born in Douala, Cameroon, on January 3, 2004. His football journey began in his homeland, where he developed through local football before joining the renowned École de Football des Brasseries du Cameroun, one of the country’s established football academies.
Interestingly, Baleba did not initially develop as a defensive midfielder. He started his youth career playing on the wing before being moved into midfield, where his athleticism, technical ability and understanding of the game became increasingly obvious.
His development eventually attracted attention from European scouts, leading to a move to France with Lille in January 2022.
At Lille, Baleba initially played for the club’s reserve side before breaking into the first team under manager Paulo Fonseca. He made his senior debut in August 2022 during Lille’s 4-1 Ligue 1 victory over Auxerre.
His performances quickly convinced Brighton that he could become the long term successor to Moisés Caicedo, who had left the club for Chelsea.
Brighton Breakthrough
Brighton completed Baleba’s signing from Lille in August 2023, bringing the young midfielder to England as part of the club’s continued strategy of developing emerging international talent.
He made his Brighton debut against Bournemouth in September 2023 before gradually establishing himself as an important member of the squad.
Baleba’s ability to cover ground, win challenges, carry the ball through midfield and resist pressure made him one of Brighton’s most exciting young players.
His 2024/25 campaign was particularly important to his development. He made 34 Premier League appearances and scored three goals, while also earning recognition as Brighton’s Young Player of the Season.
Despite experiencing an inconsistent campaign more recently, Baleba remained highly regarded across the Premier League. His overall physical profile and potential have continued to attract major clubs.
Reuters reports that Baleba made 31 league appearances last season and has accumulated more than 100 appearances for Brighton across competitions since arriving from Lille.
Cameroon International With Big Ambitions
Baleba’s rise at club level has also translated to the international stage.
The midfielder made his senior Cameroon debut in June 2024 during a World Cup qualifying victory over Cape Verde. He has since become part of the country’s emerging generation of players and has represented the Indomitable Lions at major international level.
Born and raised in Cameroon, Baleba represents another product of the country’s long tradition of producing powerful and technically gifted midfielders.
His journey from the football pitches of Douala to Lille, Brighton and now Manchester United demonstrates how quickly his career has developed.
What Baleba Can Bring to Manchester United
Manchester United are expected to see Baleba primarily as a defensive or box to box midfielder capable of operating in different systems.
His greatest strengths include his athleticism, ball recovery, ability to drive forward with possession and willingness to compete physically.
He can operate as a holding midfielder but is also comfortable moving higher up the pitch. His versatility could become particularly valuable for United as they look to create a more dynamic midfield capable of handling the physical demands of the Premier League.
Baleba’s arrival could also increase competition for places in the centre of the pitch, with United already strengthening that department during the summer.
The signing is therefore not simply about adding another midfielder. It represents an attempt to build a younger and more physically imposing core around which Manchester United can develop over the coming seasons.
A New Chapter at Old Trafford
With the agreement now reached and the medical process progressing, Baleba is closing in on the biggest move of his young career.
A £65 million guaranteed fee, potentially rising to £70 million, makes him one of the major investments of Manchester United’s summer rebuild. The five year contract, together with an option for a further year, also underlines the club’s belief that the Cameroon international can become an important figure at Old Trafford for years to come.
For Baleba, the move marks another extraordinary step in a career that began in Douala and passed through Cameroon’s academy system, Lille and Brighton before reaching one of the biggest clubs in world football.
Now, with the final paperwork and medical formalities being completed, the young midfielder is preparing for a new challenge in Manchester.
Carlos Baleba to Manchester United is no longer just a transfer story. It is becoming a reality, with the Cameroon star set to begin a new chapter at Old Trafford.
