Paris Saint-Germain were forced to settle for a point in their opening Ligue 1 match of the 2026/27 season as Ferran Torres came off the bench to score twice and rescue a 2-2 draw against Rennes at Roazhon Park on Sunday.
The reigning French champions endured a difficult first half and appeared destined for a disappointing defeat after Sebastian Szymanski and Esteban Lepaul gave Rennes a two-goal advantage. However, Torres produced a stunning second-half intervention on his competitive debut for PSG, scoring twice to ensure Luis Enrique’s side avoided an opening-day loss.
The match was originally scheduled to be played at the Parc des Princes, but damage to the pitch caused by extreme heat and deteriorating conditions forced the fixture to be moved to Rennes.
Szymanski Punishes PSG Early
Rennes made the perfect start and took the lead after just nine minutes.
Sebastian Szymanski found the net with a shot that went in off the post, sending the home supporters into celebration and immediately putting PSG under pressure.
Despite PSG enjoying significant possession, Rennes looked more dangerous in the attacking areas and repeatedly threatened on the counter.
PSG thought they had found an equaliser when Désiré Doué put the ball in the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside. The visitors continued to struggle to turn their possession into clear-cut chances.
Lepaul Doubles Rennes’ Advantage
Rennes’ pressure was rewarded again in the 38th minute.
Przemyslaw Frankowski created the opening from the right wing, sending a low cross into the PSG penalty area. Esteban Lepaul reacted quickest and turned the delivery into the net to make it 2-0.
The goal gave Rennes a deserved two-goal cushion at half-time and left PSG facing an early test in their title defence.
Torres Changes the Game
Luis Enrique responded at half-time by introducing Ferran Torres and Mika Godts, with Torres replacing Ousmane Dembélé.
The decision immediately transformed PSG’s attack.
Torres, who joined PSG from Barcelona after scoring Spain’s winning goal in the 2026 World Cup final, had only recently arrived in Paris and had not played competitively since the World Cup final. His introduction nevertheless proved decisive.
The Spanish forward needed only 26 minutes to announce himself.
Torres Scores on His PSG Debut
In the 71st minute, Torres reduced the deficit to 2-1.
The forward beat Rennes’ offside trap before collecting a perfectly weighted pass from Fabián Ruiz. Torres showed excellent composure before slotting the ball beyond the goalkeeper to score his first goal for PSG.
The goal suddenly gave the visitors belief and shifted the momentum heavily in their favour.
Torres Completes Stunning Comeback
Torres was not finished.
The Spanish international completed his brace in the 83rd minute, once again with Ruiz providing the assist.
This time, Ruiz delivered a curling cross from the left, and Torres attacked the ball brilliantly before heading it into the net to make it 2-2.
In just over half an hour, the former Barcelona forward had transformed PSG from a side staring at defeat into one chasing all three points. Both goals came through combinations with Ruiz, making the Spanish duo the central figures in PSG’s comeback.
PSG Left Frustrated Despite Comeback
The equaliser gave PSG momentum, but the champions could not find a third goal before the final whistle.
Rennes had produced an excellent first-half display and deserved credit for making life extremely difficult for the visitors. PSG dominated possession but struggled to create enough clear chances during the opening period, allowing the home side to take advantage of their opportunities.
For Rennes, the result will feel like a missed opportunity after surrendering a two-goal lead. For PSG, however, the point represents a valuable escape from what could have been a damaging opening-day defeat.
Torres Provides Early Statement
The biggest positive for PSG was undoubtedly the immediate impact of Torres.
The 26-year-old arrived in Paris with huge expectations after scoring Spain’s World Cup-winning goal, and he wasted no time showing why PSG wanted him. Coming off the bench while his new team were two goals down, Torres scored twice and demonstrated his finishing ability, movement and aerial threat.
His performance also provided Luis Enrique with an intriguing selection dilemma for PSG’s next fixtures.
After an underwhelming first half, the champions found their spark through Torres and Ruiz, while Rennes will regret failing to protect a lead that had appeared sufficient to secure a memorable opening-day victory.
In the end, Rennes 2-2 PSG was a night defined by a remarkable comeback. Rennes had the perfect start, but Torres had the final word, rescuing a point for the defending champions and announcing himself in spectacular fashion on his Ligue 1 debut.
