Nigerian youngster Suleman Sani has completed a surprise move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Qadsiah, bringing his brief spell with German Bundesliga club RB Leipzig to an unexpected end.
The 20-year-old winger has joined Al-Qadsiah on a permanent transfer after spending just over six months with Leipzig, where he arrived with significant expectations but never made a competitive first-team appearance. The move represents another major step in the young Nigerian’s rapidly developing career, even if the destination may have surprised some observers.
RB Leipzig officially confirmed that Sani has left the club to join Al-Qadsiah, with reports putting the value of the transfer at up to €8 million. The German club had signed the Nigerian from Slovakian side AS Trenčín in January 2026 for a reported fee of around €5 million, meaning Leipzig could make a healthy profit despite Sani never featuring for their senior side.
For Sani, however, the transfer is about much more than the financial side of the deal. It gives him the opportunity to move away from the crowded attacking options at Leipzig and, potentially, play a much more important role at a club with growing ambitions in Saudi Arabia.
Sani joined Leipzig after making a name for himself at AS Trenčín, where his pace, direct running, technical ability and eye for goal attracted attention from clubs across Europe. Before moving to Slovakia, he had also impressed in Nigeria, particularly during his time with Akwa United.
His breakthrough season in Nigeria was particularly eye-catching. The young forward scored 11 goals in 15 league appearances for Akwa United during the 2023/24 campaign, performances that helped establish him as one of the country’s most promising young attacking players.
His move to AS Trenčín provided the next stage of his development. In Slovakia, Sani gained valuable experience playing senior football and continued to attract attention before Leipzig eventually secured his signature.
The German club appeared to see him as a long-term investment, handing him a contract that was scheduled to run until 2031. But football can move quickly, particularly for young players trying to establish themselves at major European clubs.
At Leipzig, Sani faced intense competition for places in an attacking group containing several highly rated young players. Reports before his Saudi move indicated that he had been training with the club’s youth side, underlining how difficult it was for him to break into the senior squad.
Rather than spending another season waiting for an opportunity, the move to Al-Qadsiah could provide Sani with something every young footballer needs — regular first-team football.
Al-Qadsiah are not simply offering a destination where Sani can disappear from the European spotlight. The Saudi club has ambitious plans and finished fourth in the Saudi Pro League last season after a strong campaign under manager Brendan Rodgers.
Rodgers’ presence could also prove important for Sani’s development. The former Liverpool and Celtic manager has experience working with young players and is expected to demand an attacking style from his team.
Al-Qadsiah also have several established names in their squad, meaning Sani will have the opportunity to learn alongside experienced professionals while competing for a place in the team.
The club’s attacking options include Mexico international Julián Quiñones, while the summer recruitment has also demonstrated the ambition of the Saudi side. The arrival of players with international experience gives Sani the chance to develop in a competitive environment rather than simply joining a club for financial reasons.
For the Nigerian winger, the biggest challenge now will be converting his potential into consistent senior performances.
His career has already moved quickly. From Nigeria to Slovakia, then Germany and now Saudi Arabia, Sani has experienced several different football environments before even reaching his 21st birthday.
The move also gives him a fresh opportunity to remind Nigerian football supporters why he was once regarded as one of the country’s brightest young prospects.
Sani has already represented Nigeria at youth level and featured for the Flying Eagles at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup. His performances at youth level further increased expectations surrounding his future.
The next chapter, however, will be about senior football.
At Leipzig, the dream of breaking into the Bundesliga did not materialise. At Al-Qadsiah, Sani will hope for a different story — one where he is not simply viewed as a promising youngster but becomes an important member of the first team.
The Saudi move may therefore look surprising on the surface, but it could prove to be a calculated career decision. At 20, regular football and responsibility could be more valuable to Sani’s development than remaining at a prestigious European club without guaranteed playing time.
For RB Leipzig, the deal provides a financial return on a player they signed only months ago. For Al-Qadsiah, it represents an investment in a talented Nigerian winger with considerable room to grow.
And for Sani, it is another chance to take control of his career.
His Leipzig chapter ended before it truly began. Now, in Saudi Arabia, the Nigerian youngster has the opportunity to make sure his next chapter is very different.
