SANTIAGO, CHILE — Nigeria’s Falconets produced a devastating first-half display against New Caledonia at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on Sunday, racing to a commanding 4-0 lead before the interval, with five players standing out in a performance that underlined their title credentials.

Ramotalahi Kareem was the standout performer of the opening half, scoring twice to help Nigeria take complete control of the contest. The forward opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 17th minute before finding the net again in the 27th minute. Her two goals made her Nigeria’s leading contributor on the scoreboard and underlined her importance to the Falconets’ attacking display.

Janet Akekoromowei was another key figure in Nigeria’s strong start. The forward got her name on the scoresheet in the 23rd minute, adding Nigeria’s third goal of the afternoon. Her contribution came during a remarkable spell for the Falconets, who scored four times in the space of 10 minutes to build an overwhelming advantage.

In midfield, Favour Nkwocha also featured among Nigeria’s best performers during the first half. Her inclusion reflects the importance of the midfield department in a period when the Falconets were able to establish a commanding position against New Caledonia. Nkwocha’s energy and control in the middle of the park allowed Nigeria to dominate possession and dictate the tempo of the game.

Tosin Rafiu was another midfielder who stood out during the opening 45 minutes. Rafiu formed part of the Nigerian side that controlled the first half and helped the team maintain its strong position as the goals continued to arrive. Her link-up play with the forwards was instrumental in Nigeria’s attacking dominance.

Tumininu Adeshina completes the selection after playing her part in Nigeria’s defensive effort. While the Falconets made the headlines with their attacking performance, keeping New Caledonia from scoring was equally important as Nigeria reached half-time with a clean sheet and a four-goal cushion.

The first-half display was a statement of intent from the Falconets, who have been one of the most impressive teams in the tournament. Nigeria’s attacking prowess was on full display, with the team scoring four goals in a devastating 10-minute spell that effectively put the game beyond New Caledonia’s reach.

The result follows Nigeria’s earlier 10-1 victory in the group stage, a match in which a Falconets star won the Player of the Match award. Nigeria have now become the first and only African nation to reach the knockout stage of the tournament, and their performances have raised hopes of a deep run.

Coach Chris Danjuma will be pleased with his team’s ruthlessness in front of goal, but will also be mindful of the need to maintain concentration in the second half and beyond. With the knockout stages approaching, the Falconets will need to sustain the level of performance that has made them one of the most feared teams in the competition.

For now, the focus is on finishing the job against New Caledonia and continuing to build momentum. The Falconets have shown they have the quality and depth to compete with the best, and their first-half performance against New Caledonia was a reminder of why they are considered one of the favourites for the title.
