JOS, NIGERIA — Mahmoud Adam, a prominent Fulani community figure in Plateau State, has reportedly been arrested in an operation that has drawn fresh attention to allegations linking him to violent attacks in Nigeria’s Middle Belt.
The reported arrest was disclosed by the US-based Daily Caller in an exclusive report published on Friday, October 2, 2026. The publication said Adam was taken into custody in the early hours of September 12 at his compound in Plateau State.
The allegations against Adam remain serious but have not been independently established in the information currently available. Nigerian authorities have also not publicly clarified all the circumstances surrounding his reported arrest or his current legal status.
Alleged Militia Leadership
According to the Daily Caller, a former US intelligence officer with expertise in Islamist terrorism identified Adam as the alleged secret leader of the Fulani Ethnic Militia (FEM) in Plateau State and surrounding Middle Belt areas.
The publication also cited Nigerian journalist Masara Kim of Truth Nigeria, who reportedly said there was evidence allegedly connecting Adam to deadly attacks in Plateau State.
The report described Adam publicly as a prominent Fulani community leader while alleging that he secretly maintained links to an armed network.
The distinction is significant because the allegations concern an individual and do not establish criminal responsibility for the wider Fulani community or any ethnic group.
Claims About Previous Arrest
The Daily Caller report also alleged that Adam had been arrested previously.
A whistleblower quoted by the publication claimed that Senator Shehu Buba, who previously chaired the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, intervened during a 2024 detention and requested Adam’s release.
The publication said the whistleblower claimed Adam was released several days later. It also published photographs that it said showed Adam and Senator Buba together on separate occasions.
The allegations concerning the senator’s intervention and Adam’s previous detention have not, however, been independently established by the sources reviewed.
Questions Over Security Connections
The US report further alleged that photographs supplied by a whistleblower showed Adam receiving gifts from senior Nigerian military officials.
One photograph discussed in the report purportedly showed Adam meeting a major general in 2023. According to the Daily Caller, the accompanying account said Adam and associates received five motorcycles after discussions about efforts to restore peace in Plateau State.
The report has generated renewed questions about relationships between community leaders, security officials and individuals later accused of involvement with armed groups.
Those allegations would require confirmation from relevant Nigerian security authorities and the individuals named.
US Lawmaker Welcomes Arrest
The reported detention has also attracted attention in the United States.
US Congressman Riley Moore welcomed the reported arrest, describing Adam as an alleged terrorist leader linked to attacks against Christians in Nigeria. Moore credited the Nigerian government and US-Nigeria security cooperation for the development.
However, reporting on the case continues to describe Adam’s alleged role as an allegation rather than an established judicial finding.
Authorities Yet To Clarify Case
The reported arrest comes amid continuing security concerns in Plateau State and other parts of Nigeria’s Middle Belt, where attacks involving armed groups, banditry and communal violence have killed and displaced civilians.
The latest reports have not established whether Adam has been formally charged, the specific offences for which he is being held, or whether a court has made any determination concerning the allegations against him.
As security agencies continue investigations, further official information will be important in determining the status of the case and the evidence supporting the allegations against the Plateau community figure.
