WAEC Appoints Suleiman Kum As New Head Of Nigeria National Office

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Suleiman Kum as the new Head of its Nigeria National Office.

The appointment was announced in a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday by WAEC Nigeria’s Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina.

Kum joined WAEC on July 17, 1998, as Assistant Registrar II and rose through the ranks to become Senior Deputy Registrar in 2024.

Before his appointment, he served as Deputy Registrar in the Office of the Head of the Nigeria National Office.

He has also served as Director of Administration, Zonal Coordinator in Port Harcourt and Ikeja, Head of the Security Printing Department, and Branch Controller in Gusau and Kano.

From September 2025 to August 2026, Kum served as Senior Deputy Registrar, Test Administration.

WAEC said his experience covers test development, examination administration, examination security, and the management of branch and zonal offices.

Kum’s Academic And Professional Background

Kum was born on October 16, 1970, in Minna, Niger State, and is from Langtang North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

He obtained a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production from the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, in 1992, graduating with Second Class Honours, Upper Division.

He later earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the National Open University of Nigeria in 2025 and is currently completing a Master of Education in Educational Administration and Planning.

Kum began his professional career in 1993 during his NYSC programme at the Division of Agricultural Colleges, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he headed the Animal Production Unit.

He later taught at Baptist High School, Jos, between 1995 and 1998.

During his WAEC career, Kum contributed to several administrative and technological reforms, including the introduction of Variable Data Printing and enhanced security features in examination printing.

He also led the introduction of facial recognition biometric devices and played a role in delivering Achievement Tests through computer-based examinations.

WAEC said his contributions have earned him several commendations and awards within and outside the examination body.

Kum succeeds Amos Dangut, who became Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office in October 2023 before being appointed the council’s Registrar and Chief Executive Officer on October 1, 2026.
