Kenya has confirmed its first case of Ebola after a Kenyan citizen who had been living in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) arrived in Nairobi, Health Minister Aden Duale announced on Tuesday.

According to the Minister, the patient arrived in Nairobi on Saturday and later died, Duale said at a press conference.

Authorities have identified 28 people who had contact with the patient, including family members and healthcare workers.

The case comes as the DRC battles its largest recorded Ebola outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain.

The outbreak was declared in May and has so far recorded more than 8,000 cases and over 4,000 deaths, according to Reuters.

The disease previously spread to neighbouring Uganda, which recorded 20 cases and two deaths before the World Health Organisation declared the country Ebola-free in August.

Ebola spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected people, including those who have died from the disease.

Symptoms can include fever, vomiting and diarrhoea, while severe cases can cause internal and external bleeding.
