OGBOMOSO, NIGERIA — Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has increased the monthly salaries of cleaners at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso. The salaries were raised from ₦15,000 to ₦80,000.

The announcement was made on Thursday. The governor’s spokesperson confirmed the development in a statement.

The Salary Increase

The increase represents a 433 per cent rise. It affects all cleaners employed by the hospital. The new salary takes effect from October 2026.

The cleaners had been earning ₦15,000 per month. Many said the amount was insufficient. They said it could not cover their basic needs.

“This is a welcome development. We can now take care of our families. We thank the governor for listening to our cries,” a cleaner said.

Governor’s Commitment

Governor Makinde said the increase was part of his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare. He said no worker should earn a poverty wage.

“We believe in the dignity of labour. Every worker deserves a living wage. The cleaners at LAUTECH are doing important work. They deserve to be paid fairly,” Makinde stated.

Broader Impact

The salary increase is expected to boost morale among the hospital’s support staff. It may also improve service delivery. Cleaners play a critical role in maintaining hygiene in hospitals.

The Oyo State Government has also announced plans to review the salaries of other categories of workers. This is part of efforts to address the impact of inflation and the rising cost of living.

Workers’ Reactions

The hospital’s cleaners expressed joy at the announcement. Many said they had been struggling to make ends meet. They said the increase would change their lives.

“We never thought this would happen. We are grateful to the governor. He has shown that he cares about us,” another cleaner said.

What This Means

The salary increase is a positive development for workers in Oyo State. It shows that the government is responsive to the needs of its employees.

It also raises questions about the salaries of other workers. Many cleaners in other government institutions earn below the new minimum wage. They may also demand an increase.

What Happens Next

The government will implement the new salary structure. It will also continue to review workers’ welfare. For now, the cleaners at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital are celebrating a well-deserved raise.
