LAGOS, NIGERIA — The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has demanded the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the shootings at Lekki Toll Gate during the EndSARS protests.

Sowore made the demand on Tuesday, marking the sixth anniversary of the protests. He questioned why victims are still waiting for justice six years later.

The Demand for Justice

In a post on his X handle, Sowore asked who ordered the shootings. He also asked why those responsible had not been prosecuted.

“Where are the killers? Who ordered the shootings at Lekki Toll Gate? Who has been prosecuted?” he wrote.

Sowore called for investigations into the roles of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, military and police commanders, and other individuals linked to the incident.

He further questioned allegations that the toll gate’s CCTV camera was removed before the shootings. He called for those claims to be investigated.

The EndSARS Movement

Sowore said the EndSARS protests went beyond the demand to disband the Special Anti-Robbery Squad. He described the movement as a revolt against police brutality, torture, extortion, and extrajudicial killings.

He pledged that, if elected in 2027, his administration would reopen investigations into the incident. He said he would establish the chain of command and prosecute anyone found culpable, regardless of rank or political connections.

What This Means

The Lekki Toll Gate incident remains a painful chapter in Nigeria’s history. Many young Nigerians were killed or injured. Six years later, victims and their families are still seeking justice.

Sowore’s demand highlights the failure of successive governments to hold perpetrators accountable. It also underscores the importance of accountability in governance.

What Happens Next

Sowore’s campaign will continue to focus on justice and accountability. He will also continue to demand answers for the victims of the Lekki Toll Gate shootings.

For now, the Nigerian government has not responded to Sowore’s demand. But the call for justice is likely to continue.
