Trump call Norwegians ‘shithouse’ over Nobel Peace Prize snub

US President Donald Trump has criticised Norway over his failure to win the Nobel Peace Prize, describing the country in vulgar terms and saying he does not want Norwegian immigrants in the United States.

Trump made the remarks during a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday, October 25, 2026, ahead of the US midterm elections scheduled for November 3.

“Frankly, Norway sucks. Norway has become a shithouse country, actually,” he said.

The US president linked his comments to the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s decision not to award him the Nobel Peace Prize, an honour he has openly expressed interest in receiving since returning to the White House in January 2025.

Trump said he would welcome immigrants from certain countries but would not want people from Norway because he had not received the award.

“So I don’t want anybody from Norway,” he said.

However, there was no official indication that the United States had introduced or planned a new immigration policy specifically targeting Norwegian nationals.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide responded to Trump’s comments on Monday, stressing that the Nobel Committee operates independently of the Norwegian government.

“He knows very well that the Nobel Committee is independent. We have reminded him of that, in case anyone is wondering and that is still the case,” Eide told Norway’s national broadcaster, NRK.

Trump has repeatedly criticised the committee’s decision, describing its choice as “a disgraceful and embarrassing decision” and arguing that he should have received the prize.

South African judge and former United Nations human rights chief Navi Pillay was named this year’s recipient, according to the report.

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by the independent Norwegian Nobel Committee, rather than directly by the Norwegian government.

Trump’s latest comments recall criticism he faced in 2018, during his first presidential term, after using similar vulgar expressions when referring to Haiti and some African countries.

His remarks about Norway come as he campaigns ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, drawing attention to his stance on immigration and his continuing dispute over the Nobel Peace Prize.
