Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi has praised Hull City’s response to their disappointing defeat to Fulham after the Tigers battled to a 1-1 draw against Brentford in the Premier League, with the Nigerian centre-back delivering an impressive defensive performance.

Hull welcomed Brentford to the MKM Stadium on Sunday, October 25, hoping to return to winning ways after suffering a setback in their previous league outing. Although they were unable to secure all three points, their performance offered encouragement, particularly after taking the lead and demonstrating greater defensive organisation.

Ajayi was pleased with the team’s reaction, emphasising the importance of responding positively after a disappointing result.

“It’s important that we had a good bounce back from last week, we did that,” the defender said after the match.

However, the Nigerian international admitted that Hull would have preferred to collect maximum points on home soil.

“We are definitely disappointed not to come away with the three points, but a point at home is always positive,” he added.

The result reflected a competitive encounter in which Hull showed considerable promise but ultimately failed to protect their advantage against a Brentford side that improved after the interval.

Oli McBurnie gave the hosts the lead from the penalty spot in the 25th minute after Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher’s poor distribution put Aaron Hickey under pressure. Tim Iroegbunam capitalised on the situation before Hickey brought him down inside the penalty area.

McBurnie stepped forward and converted the spot-kick to give Hull an important advantage, rewarding their aggressive approach during the opening stages.

Hull continued to frustrate Brentford for much of the first half, with their defensive structure limiting the visitors’ ability to create clear-cut opportunities.

Ajayi was central to those efforts, using his physical presence, positioning and reading of the game to help contain Brentford’s attacking threats.

The Nigerian defender won five of the six tackles he attempted, made four clearances, recorded five recoveries and completed two interceptions, according to the match statistics reported after the game.

His contribution earned him two Man of the Match honours. He received the Premier League’s Player of the Match recognition and Hull City’s corresponding club award, securing 43.6 per cent of the vote to finish ahead of teammates McBurnie, Iroegbunam and Lewis Coyle.

The recognition underlined Ajayi’s importance to Hull’s defensive efforts and further highlighted his growing influence since the club returned to the Premier League.

Brentford, however, emerged from the interval with greater attacking intent and eventually found a way back into the contest.

The visitors equalised in the 63rd minute when Dango Ouattara finished from close range after Igor Thiago helped keep the ball alive inside the penalty area.

The goal changed the momentum of the match, with Brentford growing in confidence as they searched for a winner.

Both teams created opportunities during the closing stages, but neither could find the decisive breakthrough. Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis made an important intervention to deny Mohamed-Ali Cho, while Joe Gelhardt missed a late opportunity that could have restored the hosts’ lead.

For Hull, the draw represented a mixed outcome. Their performance demonstrated that they could compete with established Premier League opposition, but their inability to turn a promising position into victory extended their winless league run to six matches.

Ajayi’s individual performance nevertheless provided a significant positive for manager Sergej Jakirovic as the club looks to improve its results.

The defender has become an important figure in Hull’s backline, bringing international experience and defensive discipline to a team seeking to establish itself at the highest level of English football.

For Nigeria, his continued involvement at Premier League level is also encouraging as the Super Eagles assess their defensive options ahead of future international assignments.

Hull will now look to build on the positives from their performance against Brentford while addressing the missed opportunities that prevented them from claiming all three points.

Ajayi’s message was clear: the response to a setback matters, but the next step is turning encouraging performances into victories.

With the Nigerian defender continuing to earn recognition for his contributions, Hull will hope his consistency can help them rediscover their winning form in the weeks ahead.
