The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has rendered account of its finances since inception.
According to NDC, it raised N8,529,632,438.77 billion in seven months from sales of nomination forms, contributions from supporters, dues and levies.
The party’s National Treasurer, Dr Peter Onigah, disclosed this while presenting its statement of account at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja.
Onigah said the party spent N2.402 billion on activities, including primaries, publicity, staff salaries, and other operational expenses.
The National Chairman of the party, Senator Moses Cleopas, said the decision to release the financial report before the NDC’s first anniversary was intended to enable members to understand how their collective resources were being managed.
Cleopas explained that the disclosure was not prompted by allegations on social media but by the party’s commitment to accountability.
He noted that although political parties are required to submit financial reports to relevant government institutions at the end of each year, the NDC chose to account to its members ahead of the statutory deadline.
“It is therefore the right and opportunity of every individual member to hear and to know what we are doing with our common resources,” he said.
While reacting to the report, Senator Umeh, representing Anambra Central and a member of the party’s NEC, described the disclosure as a demonstration of transparency capable of building public trust.
He said the presentation had helped party members understand the NDC’s financial position rather than rely on speculation.
Umeh also urged the NEC to approve funds for state executive committees to secure secretariat offices and intensify voter enlightenment campaigns.
