Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has confirmed that Bruno Fernandes will retain the club’s captaincy despite recent tensions between the pair, insisting that the Portuguese midfielder remains fully committed to the club ahead of Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Chelsea.
Carrick’s decision follows a difficult week at Old Trafford, where disagreements over the team’s tactics and a series of disappointing results intensified scrutiny of the manager’s leadership.
Fernandes was left on the bench for the entire 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday after publicly questioning Manchester United’s tactical approach following their 4-1 Champions League loss to Como.
The midfielder had criticised the team’s decision not to press opponents man-to-man, arguing that the approach allowed Como to exploit spaces and gain confidence during the match.
His comments raised questions about the relationship between the club captain and Carrick, particularly after the manager opted not to introduce Fernandes against Bournemouth despite United’s struggles.
Harry Maguire wore the captain’s armband in Fernandes’ absence, prompting speculation that the England international could take over the role permanently.
However, Carrick has dismissed any suggestion that a change of captain is under consideration.
“He’s the captain of our football club,” Carrick said, reaffirming Fernandes’ position within the squad.
The manager also emphasised that Fernandes remains an important figure in the dressing room and is determined to help United improve their performances.
“He’s fully committed to this football club, he’s fully committed to making things better,” Carrick added.
The comments follow a face-to-face meeting between Carrick and Fernandes at the club’s Carrington training ground earlier in the week. The discussions were intended to resolve their differences and allow both parties to focus on improving the team’s fortunes.
Reports indicated that the meeting was productive, with the two men prepared to move forward after the disagreement over tactics and the midfielder’s subsequent omission from the starting line-up.
Carrick maintained that leaving Fernandes out against Bournemouth was a decision based on the requirements of that particular match rather than an attempt to undermine his authority.
“It was a decision based on what we felt was right for the game. That’s it,” the manager explained.
Fernandes has been one of United’s most influential players since joining the club from Sporting CP in January 2020. His creativity, leadership and contribution to the team’s attacking play have made him a central figure at Old Trafford.
Appointed captain in 2023, the midfielder has frequently been responsible for leading the team through difficult periods. Carrick’s decision to retain him in the role signals that the manager continues to value his influence despite the recent disagreement.
The controversy comes at a challenging time for United, whose 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth followed the damaging loss to Como and extended their winless run across competitions to eight matches.
The results have increased pressure on Carrick, with the club’s hierarchy reportedly discussing his position earlier in the week before deciding to give him an opportunity to turn the situation around.
Carrick, however, insisted that he does not need assurances about his future and remains focused on improving the team’s performances.
“I don’t need assurances from anyone,” he said, acknowledging the responsibilities that come with managing Manchester United.
The manager’s immediate task is to prepare his side for Saturday’s trip to Stamford Bridge, where United will face Chelsea in a fixture that could prove important to their efforts to recover from their recent slump.
Fernandes is expected to return to contention for the match after his discussions with Carrick, although his inclusion in the starting line-up will depend on the manager’s final selection.
For United, resolving the disagreement away from the pitch is only the first step. The team must now translate that understanding into improved performances and results.
Carrick has made his position clear: Fernandes remains captain, and both men are expected to work together as Manchester United attempt to halt their poor run of form.
