LAGOS, NIGERIA — The African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has broken his silence on the brutal attack on him in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Sowore recounted how thugs pounced on him and beat him mercilessly.
The Attack
According to him, the attack happened in broad daylight at a restaurant in Ado-Ekiti. He had gone there to meet with some of his supporters.
“They beat me like a criminal. They came from nowhere, about 20 of them, armed with sticks and bottles. They said they will kill me if I come to Ekiti again,” Sowore said.
He said he sustained injuries on his face and body. He had to be rushed to a hospital for treatment.
Allegations Against Police and DSS
Sowore said the attackers were captured on CCTV. But he alleged that the police and the Department of State Services have seized the footage to cover up the incident.
He accused the Ekiti State government of sponsoring the attack to silence opposition voices in the state. The state government has not yet responded to the allegation.
Defiance
The activist said despite the attack, he will not be intimidated. He said he will continue to fight for justice and democracy in Nigeria.
“I am not afraid. They can beat me, they can arrest me, but they cannot stop me from speaking the truth,” he added.
Public Reaction
The attack on Sowore has continued to generate reactions on social media. Many Nigerians condemned the incident and called for the arrest of the perpetrators.
Some questioned why the police had not made any arrests. Others accused the government of complicity.
What This Means
The attack highlights the dangers faced by opposition figures in Nigeria. It also raises questions about the safety of journalists and activists.
The incident could heighten political tension ahead of the 2027 elections.
What Happens Next
The police have not yet issued a statement on the incident. The Ekiti State Government has also not responded to Sowore’s allegations.
For now, the focus is on ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice. The coming days will reveal whether the authorities will act.
