ILE-IFE, OSUN STATE — The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Sonny Echono, has said that Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has successfully fulfilled the vision of its founding fathers, particularly in the areas of academic excellence, research development, and human capital formation.
Echono made the remark while highlighting the contributions of the institution to Nigeria’s higher education sector, describing it as one of the country’s foremost universities that has consistently produced top-tier professionals across multiple fields.
He noted that since its establishment, the university has maintained a strong reputation for academic discipline, innovation, and intellectual development, aligning closely with the original objectives set by its founding leaders.
According to him, OAU has played a significant role in producing experts who have contributed meaningfully to national development in areas such as medicine, engineering, law, social sciences, and public administration.
Echono further stated that the institution continues to serve as a model for other universities in Nigeria, particularly in terms of academic standards, research output, and institutional governance.
He emphasized that through sustained support from TETFund, Nigerian universities, including OAU, have been able to improve infrastructure, expand research capacity, and enhance the quality of teaching and learning.
The TETFund boss also commended the university’s commitment to knowledge production and its ability to remain relevant in addressing contemporary national and global challenges.
Education stakeholders have long regarded OAU as one of Nigeria’s most influential institutions, known for its strong academic culture and its history of producing graduates who have excelled in both public and private sectors.
Analysts note that the recognition of OAU’s contributions underscores the importance of sustained investment in higher education as a driver of national development and innovation.
Echono reaffirmed TETFund’s commitment to continuing its partnership with tertiary institutions across the country to further strengthen research, improve learning environments, and support capacity building for lecturers and students.
As Nigerian universities continue to face challenges such as funding gaps and infrastructure deficits, stakeholders argue that institutions like OAU demonstrate the potential impact of consistent investment and long-term academic planning.
The remarks come amid renewed discussions on the role of universities in shaping Nigeria’s future workforce and driving socio-economic transformation through research and innovation.
