LONDON, ENGLAND — Former Arsenal forward Chuks Aneke has officially retired from professional football at the age of 33.
His retirement ends a career that saw him represent several clubs in England and Belgium.
Aneke announced his retirement through a statement shared on his official Instagram account on Wednesday. The former striker accompanied his announcement with a video montage featuring some of the most memorable moments from his football journey.
Farewell Message
In his farewell message, Aneke expressed gratitude to the people who contributed to his career. He thanked coaches, club staff, teachers, friends, family members, and supporters.
He also recognised individuals who had not supported him. He suggested that both positive and negative experiences played a role in shaping his journey.
The former Arsenal player concluded his message by expressing enthusiasm about beginning a new chapter outside professional football.
Reports indicate that he is considering opportunities in football scouting and television analysis. This suggests that he intends to remain involved in the sport.
Arsenal Journey
Aneke’s football journey began at Arsenal. He joined the club’s academy in 2001 at just seven years old.
After progressing through the youth ranks, he signed his first professional contract in July 2010. He made his senior debut in 2011. He came on as a 90th-minute substitute against Shrewsbury Town in a League Cup fixture.
During his development at Arsenal, former manager Arsene Wenger compared him to Manchester City legend Yaya Toure. Wenger recognised his physical qualities and technical abilities.
However, after spending 13 years with the North London club, Aneke was released in June 2014.
Loan Spells and Crewe Success
He subsequently gained experience through loan spells at Stevenage, Preston North End, and Crewe Alexandra.
His time at Crewe was particularly productive. He scored 24 goals in 82 appearances. He also featured in the club’s 2-0 victory over Southend United in the 2013 Football League Trophy final at Wembley.
Belgium and MK Dons
Aneke later moved to Belgium. He spent two seasons with Zulte Waregem before returning to England to join MK Dons in August 2016.
He played an important role in their promotion campaign. He scored 19 goals during the 2018–19 season as the club secured promotion from League Two.
Later Career
His subsequent career included spells with Charlton Athletic and Birmingham City. He joined Charlton in 2019, moved to Birmingham in 2021, and returned to Charlton in January 2022.
He eventually departed in 2025 following the club’s promotion to the Championship.
In September 2025, Aneke signed for Shrewsbury Town. He made 15 appearances without starting a match. His playing relationship with the club ended in January by mutual consent, bringing his professional career to a close.
What This Means
Aneke’s retirement marks the end of a long career. He was a talented player who never quite fulfilled his early promise at Arsenal.
However, he had a successful career in the lower leagues. He will be remembered for his goalscoring exploits at Crewe and MK Dons.
What Happens Next
Aneke will begin a new chapter in his life. He is expected to remain involved in football through scouting or media work.
For now, the football world wishes him well in his future endeavours.
