In Jos during the Plateau unity Christmas Carols and Praise, former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon. Has disclosed that he pleaded with the late General Sani Abacha to spare the life of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) has reported; the former Head of State statement. As he recently recounted a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s history when he appealed to General Sani Abacha to spare the life of General Olusegun Obasanjo.

Gowon made this disclosure in Jos, where he reminisced about his time in office. And his relationships with other prominent Nigerian leaders. According to Gowon, he intervened on Obasanjo’s behalf when Abacha’s regime sentenced him to death for his alleged role in a coup plot.

Gowon’s revelation sheds new light on the complex and often tumultuous relationships between Nigeria’s military leaders during the 1990s. Abacha’s regime was notorious for its human rights abuses and suppression of opposition, and Obasanjo’s imprisonment was seen as a symbol of the regime’s brutality.

Obasanjo, who was a prominent critic of Abacha’s regime, was arrested in 1995 and charged with treason. He was sentenced to death, but his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment after international pressure. Obasanjo was eventually released from prison in 1998, after Abacha’s death.

Gowon’s intervention on Obasanjo’s behalf is a testament to the complex web of relationships between Nigeria’s military leaders. Despite their differences, Gowon and Obasanjo have maintained a cordial relationship over the years, and Gowon’s actions demonstrate that even in the midst of political turmoil, personal relationships and loyalty can play a significant role.
