The Presidency has rejected claims that President Bola Tinubu borrowed ₦120 trillion within three years of assuming office, describing the figure as misleading.
The Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, accused opposition groups of spreading false information about the country’s debt profile.
Olusegun made the clarification in a statement posted on X on Sunday, reacting to a viral social media graphic which compared Nigeria’s debt under previous administrations with that of the Tinubu government.
The graphic claimed that 16 former Nigerian leaders borrowed a total of ₦46 trillion over 63 years, while Tinubu borrowed ₦120 trillion in just three years.
But Olusegun said the comparison did not tell the full story, arguing that it ignored some existing debts and the impact of changes in the exchange rate.
