The programme coordinator of the Coalition For The Protection Of Democracy (COPDEM) media capacity building training in Awka and the Secretary of COPDEM in Edo state, Dr Marshall Odede has stated that cockroach is a local delicacy with healing and nourishing content.
He stated this while addressing participants during a lecture recently at DDM academy Awka, Anambra state.
Dr Odede noted that during his secondary schools days, his teacher made him to understand the delicious nature of cockroach.
He allowed them to eat it after thorough preparation, adding that cockroaches nourish the body and make it glitter.
It should be recalled that cockroaches have been identified as a common disease carrier and so cannot serve as food in most part of Africa, particularly Nigeria.
A recent research from Google stated that cockroaches threaten human health because they transmit or aggravate many serious diseases including salmonella, E-coli, food poisoning, asthma and hepatitis.
Dr Odede who participated in the ongoing media capacity building workshop that lasted for two weeks at Awka noted that cockroaches can be dissected and prepared as food for human consumption.
“Cockroaches have been discovered to belong to the order of blattodea insects and about 30 cockroach species out of 4600 are associated with human habitats”, Google research explained.
