The Labour Party (LP) has firmly denied allegations that Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, is planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In an interview with the Diaspora digital media (DDM) on Friday in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, described the rumors as unfounded and baseless.

Reports had surfaced suggesting that five first-term governors from opposition parties, including Alex Otti of Abia, were considering defecting to the APC.

The other governors mentioned in the report include Peter Mbah of Enugu, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers, and Umoh Eno of Akwa Ibom, all of whom are members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Both the PDP and the Labour Party have faced internal challenges following the 2023 general elections.

Responding to the speculations, Ifoh reassured the public that Governor Alex Otti remains committed to the Labour Party.

“These claims are mere rumors, and I hope they remain so.

We are in constant communication with Governor Otti, and he has assured us of his loyalty to the party.

He is not leaving, and we are confident he will remain with us through 2027,” Ifoh stated.

The National Publicity Secretary emphasized that while defections are common in a democratic system, there is no basis for linking Otti to such plans.

“Defections have occurred in the past, but Governor Alex Otti has made no indication of leaving.

He is focused on his responsibilities and committed to the Labour Party’s vision,” Ifoh added.

Ifoh also highlighted legal precedents regarding party defections, citing interpretations of Section 84 of the 1999 Constitution.

He noted that individuals who defect have often faced legal challenges, making it a sensitive issue.

The rumors, according to Ifoh, may have stemmed from challenges faced by opposition governors in managing their states.

However, he dismissed such claims about Otti as unfounded.

“Governor Alex Otti is firmly with us.

The Labour Party remains strong, and we are optimistic about increasing our presence by 2027,” he said.

The Labour Party’s leadership continues to work on resolving internal issues, aiming to strengthen the party’s position nationwide.

With assurances from Governor Otti and efforts to address challenges, the party is optimistic about its future.

By reiterating Alex Otti’s loyalty, the Labour Party aims to dispel any doubts about its stability and unity as it prepares for future elections
