The Department of State Services (DSS) on Thursday interrogated several lawmakers from the Lagos State House of Assembly following a petition reportedly submitted by the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.

Diaspora digital media (DDM) disclosed that more than half of the lawmakers were invited for questioning and spent several hours at the DSS office before being released later in the evening.

Obasa, who was ousted from his position on January 13 over allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and financial mismanagement, had petitioned the security agency, arguing that his removal was not carried out lawfully.

His complaint prompted the DSS to summon the lawmakers for clarification on the circumstances surrounding his removal.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has a long history of power struggles, with lawmakers often caught in leadership disputes.

As the legislative body responsible for making laws and overseeing the executive arm in Nigeria’s most economically significant state, the Assembly has seen internal conflicts fueled by political ambitions and allegations of corruption.

Mudashiru Obasa, a veteran politician, had been at the helm of the Assembly since 2015, making him one of the longest-serving Speakers in Lagos history.

Under his leadership, the House passed several key laws that shaped governance in the state.

However, his tenure was also marked by controversies, including accusations of financial mismanagement and abuse of office.

These concerns led to increasing dissatisfaction among some lawmakers, culminating in his eventual removal.

The recent crisis in the Assembly underscores the deep-seated divisions among the lawmakers.

While some members remain loyal to Obasa, others see his removal as a necessary step toward transparency and accountability.

The petition he submitted to the DSS suggests that he is not willing to accept the decision without a fight.

Confirming their visit, Ogundipe Olukayode, the spokesperson for the Assembly, stated that the lawmakers were merely providing necessary details regarding the events leading to Obasa’s removal.

He further praised the DSS for its professional handling of the matter, ensuring that the questioning process was conducted in a fair and respectful manner.

Meanwhile, Obasa, who had held the position of Speaker for nearly a decade, remains determined to challenge his removal.

After returning from the United States, he reaffirmed his stance, insisting that he was still the Speaker and urging fellow lawmakers to adhere to what he described as “the right process” in resolving the leadership dispute.

Political tensions continue to rise within the Lagos State House of Assembly as lawmakers remain divided over Obasa’s removal and his persistent efforts to reclaim his seat.

With the situation still unfolding, observers are closely monitoring how the confrontation between Obasa and the lawmakers will play out in the coming days.
