Four killed in Kano as security operatives clash with residents over demolition

At least four people have been killed in Kano following a violent clash between security operatives and residents.

Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that the incident occurred in Rimin Auzinawa, Ungogo Local Government Area, when security forces allegedly opened fire on resisting residents.

Eyewitnesses said the conflict began on Sunday night when KNUPDA officials arrived with security operatives to demolish buildings.

The affected structures, estimated at 40, were mostly residential buildings still under construction in the disputed area.

Residents claim the land belongs to Bayero University, Kano (BUK), but KNUPDA had assured them their properties were safe.

They insist all issues regarding the land were resolved and that officials had promised no demolition would take place.

However, on Sunday night, KNUPDA officials and security operatives allegedly stormed the area and began demolishing buildings.

As residents resisted, security operatives reportedly fired live rounds, leading to the deaths of four individuals.

The victims have since been buried, and their families are demanding justice for the killings.

A resident described the situation as heartbreaking and accused the authorities of betraying their trust.

He said they were assured their properties were not at risk, yet officials destroyed them without warning.

The incident has caused tension in Kano, with many questioning the authorities’ actions and the use of force.

At the KNUPDA office, senior officials were absent, and only junior staff remained without clear directives.

A staff member revealed that panic has spread among employees, and the office remains nearly deserted.

He added that the car parks were empty, and everyone was uncertain about what would happen next.

A senior KNUPDA director denied the agency’s direct involvement in the demolition.

He claimed that a task force from the Kano State Ministry of Land and Physical Planning carried out the operation.

Many Kano residents have expressed concerns over frequent demolitions and growing tensions between the government and the public.

They are demanding an independent investigation into the killings and the circumstances surrounding the demolition.

As of Monday, the Kano State government had not released an official statement on the incident.

The killings have sparked outrage, with residents calling for justice and accountability from the authorities.

The situation remains tense, with fears of further unrest in the affected community.
