Imo communities unite to combat kidnapping crisis
DDM News

Imo State has been battling a surge in kidnapping, killings, and criminal activities in recent times.
Diaspora digital media (DDM) revealed that the situation became more alarming after neighboring states took decisive actions against criminals, forcing them to seek refuge in Imo State.
These criminals include kidnappers, bandits, drug dealers, internet fraudsters, and traditional occultists involved in illegal activities.
Fearing an influx of these dangerous elements, the Imo State government and security agencies launched proactive security measures.
Communities across the 27 local government areas have intensified efforts to reclaim their land from criminals.
From Umulolo, Umukele, Ihube, and Aku in Okigwe to Ihioma and Akattah in Orlu, locals have risen to protect themselves.
Other communities such as Ezioha, Umuene, and Afara in Mbaitoli, Arondizogu, Umuchu, Ezeala in Ideato North, and Ihitte in Ngor Okpala have also joined the fight.
One major concern is the thick bushes and abandoned lands used as hideouts by criminals.
These areas have been difficult to access, making them perfect shelters for kidnappers and other criminal groups.
With the support of the 34 Artillery Brigade Obinze in Owerri, communities have started reclaiming these dangerous zones.
Army operatives, working alongside community members, are dismantling criminal hideouts across different parts of the state.
Residents are pointing out secret locations used by criminals, while soldiers execute professional clearance operations.
This partnership has already led to the arrest of several armed criminals hiding inside thick forests.
The operation has also drastically reduced night attacks, bringing relief to many residents.
Female farmers, previously scared of going to their farms, now feel safer returning to work.
Okey Okere, a youth leader in Ihitte, confirmed that community-driven security has restored hope and confidence among locals.
In a shocking development, military personnel on a night patrol intercepted heavily armed police officers in unmarked vehicles.
The police operatives were dressed in civilian clothing and could not provide a clear explanation for their movement.
This incident raised concerns about compromised security operations and the presence of unauthorized forces in the state.
The Commissioner for Homeland Security and Vigilante Affairs, Hon. Modestus Osakwe, has urged communities to profile their residents.
This initiative aims to identify strangers and prevent criminal elements from settling unnoticed.
One remarkable success was recorded in Umuokanne, where local youths rescued a kidnapped female trader, Mrs. Obiageli Ogugua.
The rescue mission, inspired by their traditional ruler, Eze Dr. Chiedoziem Nwokoma, took place in the dangerous Oforola forest.
Community security operatives tracked the kidnappers and successfully freed the victim without paying ransom.
This heroic act highlighted the effectiveness of grassroots security efforts against criminal activities.
More communities are now actively participating in securing their environment through local security networks.
Residents are determined to take control of their safety rather than relying solely on government forces.
The collaboration between security agencies and locals is restoring peace and confidence in various communities.
With continued efforts, Imo State could soon be recognized as one of the safest states in Nigeria.
