Northern elders forum issues strong demands over killing of northern travellers in Edo

Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has taken a firm stance on the killing of northern travellers in Uromi, Edo State.

The organization has issued three major demands directed at both the Edo State Government and the Federal Government.

These demands include the public trial of those responsible for the killings to ensure justice is served.

Additionally, NEF insists on an unreserved apology from Edo authorities for the tragic loss of innocent lives.

The forum also calls for financial compensation for the families of the victims in accordance with prescribed standards.

NEF, a socio-political organization advocating for northern Nigeria’s interests, warned that the region will not tolerate further attacks.

Professor Abubakar Jiddere, the forum’s spokesperson, released these demands in an official statement over the weekend.

NEF insists that all individuals involved in the killings must be arrested and prosecuted publicly.

The organization emphasizes that transparency in the judicial process is necessary for accountability.

Justice must be swift and visible to deter future acts of violence against northern travellers.

Furthermore, NEF demands a formal apology from the Edo State Government for this tragic and senseless act.

The apology should come with a clear commitment to preventing similar incidents in the future.

The forum also insists that financial compensation should be paid to the bereaved families.

This compensation should align with the victims’ religious and traditional customs.

NEF has given the state and federal governments a 14-day ultimatum to meet its demands.

Failure to comply, according to NEF, will result in unspecified consequences.

Background of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF)

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) is a prominent advocacy group for northern Nigeria.

It was established to represent the interests of northerners in national discussions.

NEF is composed of elder statesmen, intellectuals, and community leaders from the northern region.

The organization actively engages in policy discussions and political interventions.

It has been vocal on security, governance, and socio-economic issues affecting the North.

NEF has repeatedly called for improved security measures in northern Nigeria.

The forum frequently urges the government to address banditry and insurgency in the region.

It collaborates with political leaders and security agencies to promote stability.

NEF has condemned previous attacks on northerners in different parts of Nigeria.

In response to the Uromi killings, NEF declared that the North has endured too many such incidents.

The forum insists that these attacks must stop immediately.

It demands that Edo State and the Federal Government take decisive action.

Widespread reactions and government response

The incident has sparked outrage across Nigeria.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered security agencies to track down the perpetrators.

Northern governors have also condemned the killings in strong terms.

They insist that extrajudicial violence is unacceptable in a civilized society.

The National Assembly has joined in condemning the attack.

Northern youths and senators have expressed their anger over the incident.

The slain travellers were on a journey from Port Harcourt to Kano for the Sallah celebrations.
