Abuja, Nigeria – Mr. Michael David, a Climate and Environmental Advocate leading the Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation, has issued a warning about the significant contribution of food waste to global warming. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, David emphasized the environmental impact of discarded food, stating that excess greenhouse gases generated from food waste, such as methane and carbon dioxide, contribute to global warming and climate change.

David expressed concern about the alarming levels of food waste during festivities, emphasizing that a considerable portion of prepared food often goes uneaten. He called on Nigerians to consider the energy and natural resources involved in processing, transporting, storing, and cooking food, urging a mindful approach to consumption.

The environmentalist highlighted that food waste in landfills produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. He also pointed out the excessive use of fresh water and groundwater resources in food production, with agriculture accounting for 70% of global water usage. David raised awareness about environmentally unfriendly packaging, which adds to landfill waste.

Providing tips to prevent food waste, David encouraged sharing uneaten but good food with others. He emphasized the need for collective responsibility, expressing concern about the quantity of wasted food and increased tonnage during festivities. David concluded by underscoring the unfairness of food wastage, especially in a nation where children experience days with empty stomachs.
