UN invites Nigerians to join Civil Society Regional Reference Group

The United Nations (UN) has announced an opportunity for Nigerians and other Africans to join the Civil Society Regional Reference Group (CSRRG) under the Spotlight Initiative Africa Regional Programme (SIARP 2).

This initiative aims to combat violence against women and girls while promoting gender equality across the continent.

*Who Can Apply

Civil society experts, youth leaders and advocates focused on gender equality and violence prevention are encouraged to apply.

The group will consist of up to 15 voluntary members who will provide advisory, advocacy and accountability functions to guide the programme’s implementation.

SIARP 2 is a flagship UN programme addressing systemic gender-based violence through partnerships and community-driven solutions. The CSRRG will ensure the programme remains aligned with grassroots movements and youth networks.

Interested candidates must submit an Expression of Interest by May 14, 2025. Application details are available through UN official channels.

*Aim
The UN projects Nigeria’s population will reach 237.5 million by 2025 according to Worldometer data. Current UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in office since 2017, has prioritized climate action, conflict resolution and human rights.

The CS-RRG

The Civil Society Regional Reference Group (CS-RRG) is a vital component of the United Nations’ efforts to combat violence against women and girls.

Established under the Spotlight Initiative, a partnership between the European Union and the UN, the CS-RRG serves as a mechanism to harness civil society expertise and inform implementation of regional programs.

The CS-RRG provides inputs on violence against women and girls, strategic direction, and public policy. It advocates for the objectives of the Spotlight Initiative and holds the initiative accountable.

The group collaborates with civil society reference groups, traditional leaders, pan-African women’s organizations, and other stakeholders. It also designates representatives to serve on steering committees, ensuring at least 20% civil society representation.

The CS-RRG consists of regional experts on eliminating violence against women and girls, leaders of regional women’s rights organizations with years of experience, individuals with knowledge of human rights and feminist frameworks, and representation from vulnerable groups and people with disabilities.

The CS-RRG operates in various regions, including Africa, the Caribbean, and other areas, with specific focus areas and initiatives.

By engaging with civil society organizations, the CS-RRG aims to promote gender equality, eliminate violence against women and girls, and support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
