Just In: Peter Obi attends lying in state of Pope Francis

Global dignitaries, religious leaders, and thousands of mourners gathered at St. Peter’s Basilica on Tuesday to pay their final respects to Pope Francis, who passed away on Monday April 21, 2025.

Among those present was Nigerian Labour Party Presidential candidate in 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi, who joined  Francis Cardinal Arinze and other notable figures at the solemn lying-in-state ceremony.

The service marked a day of reflection on the legacy of a pontiff widely regarded as a champion of humility, compassion, and moral leadership.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, served as the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church.

His papacy was defined by his commitment to the poor, his advocacy for peace, and his outspoken stance on social justice and climate change.

“Pope Francis was more than a Pontiff; he was a moral light in a world darkened by inequality and indifference,” PO said in a statement after the ceremony.

“He lived for others, spoke for the voiceless, and reminded us that leadership is about lifting others, not self-exaltation.”

PO recalled his personal encounters with the Pope, describing them as spiritually profound.

“I was blessed to meet Pope Francis on three occasions. Each meeting left a lasting impression. He radiated peace and inspired faith.”

He also noted his involvement with Scholars Occultantes, an international circle of thinkers founded by Pope Francis during his time as Archbishop.

The group focuses on ethical leadership, truth, and social transformation. According to PO, the organisation deepened his understanding of the Pope’s intellectual and moral teachings.

Calling on African political and religious leaders to reflect on the Pope’s life, PO urged a renewed commitment to justice, peace, and human dignity.

“Let this not be a moment of mourning alone, but a call to lead with conscience and govern with love,” he said.

Pope Francis’ funeral mass is expected to draw more world leaders and faithful from across continents, as the Vatican prepares for a farewell that matches the global impact of his pontificate.
