The Bayelsa State  Command of the Nigeria Police has confirmed that Olotu Wanemi Omubo, leader of the notorious Bobos cult group, was killed by members of his own group in a bid to seize leadership.

Omubo, a Nembe indigene from Nembe Local Government Area and a Phase 2 beneficiary of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), was shot dead on April 24, along Good News Street in Azikoro, Yenagoa.

Commissioner of Police, Alonyenu Francis Idu, during a media briefing, revealed that 95% of police intelligence indicates Omubo’s death resulted from an intra-cult leadership struggle.

“They took him out and made it look like an inter-cult rivalry to profit from his death,” Idu said, noting Omubo’s criminal record, including illegal gun possession.

He added, “He was controversially influenced to be let off the hook, and that is why I have always said that when you influence the release of a criminal, you are building a disastrous effect.”

Idu assured residents that cult-related killings would be curbed and announced the arrest of nine suspects for crimes including cultism, kidnapping, armed robbery, murder, and unlawful possession of firearms.

Among them, Mohammed Adamu, 50, and Adiamakubo Orubo, 37, were arrested for the alleged disappearance of Ashiru Ishiaku, 26, and his tricycle on April 29, 2025. David Ngo, 36, a member of the Icelanders cult from Brass LGA, was detained for allegedly stabbing Goodwill Ovuru to death in Agudama-Ekpetiama on April 16, 2025.

In Onopa, Yenagoa LGA, Monday Daniel, 28, was arrested for an armed robbery on April 29, 2025, where four men stole a Redmi phone worth N180,000 from Amarachi Emeachi.
