President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inducted two modern Agusta 109 Trekker helicopters into the fleet of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).

The event took place at the Presidential Air Fleet Apron in Abuja.

It was part of activities marking the 61st anniversary of the Nigerian Air Force.

The President was represented by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima at the official ceremony.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the Vice President reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to military modernization under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He praised the Nigerian Air Force as a symbol of excellence in operational performance and national defense.

The Vice President also commended the NAF’s peacekeeping efforts across West Africa.

These include contributions to missions in The Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Mali.

He stated that the NAF continues to play a critical role in regional peace and security.

Vice President Shettima emphasized that the recent acquisitions are part of a deliberate effort to enhance the nation’s defense capabilities.

He said that the move aligns with the government’s broader strategy of strengthening internal security and supporting national development.

The newly acquired helicopters are described as multi-role aviation assets with advanced features.

They are built for both combat and humanitarian missions.

Experts say the helicopters are highly regarded for their speed, agility, and advanced navigation systems.

These features make them ideal for reconnaissance, close air support, and troop transport.

They are also suitable for search-and-rescue operations and medical evacuations in conflict zones.

President Tinubu stressed that national development cannot take place without security.

He noted that economic growth, democracy, and justice all rely on a safe and stable environment.

He declared that the administration is focused on ensuring the Armed Forces are well-equipped and mission-ready.

“This event marks a major step in our quest to build a safer Nigeria,” the President stated through his representative.

He acknowledged the threat posed by insurgents, bandits, and other criminal elements across the country.

He emphasized that a more effective military is needed to protect citizens and restore peace.

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, welcomed the helicopters as a significant boost to the NAF’s fleet.

He described the induction as a leap forward in the modernization of the Nigerian Air Force.

He said the aircraft would improve response times and expand operational capabilities during emergencies and joint missions.

He stated that the platforms will be deployed for surveillance, combat support, and humanitarian tasks.

“These helicopters are game-changers in our ongoing operations,” he said.

He thanked the Federal Government for its continued investment in the military.

He pledged that the NAF will remain professional and dedicated to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty.

The induction comes after other recent procurements, including T-129 ATAK helicopters, Diamond-62 surveillance aircraft, and King Air 360i platforms.

These investments reflect a broader shift toward strengthening Nigeria’s air power and modernizing its military assets.

The ceremony concluded with a flypast of the helicopters and a formal inspection by senior officials.

Background information reveals that the Agusta 109 Trekker is a lightweight, twin-engine helicopter developed by Leonardo of Italy.

It is used by various military and law enforcement agencies across the world.

It is known for its flexibility, allowing it to perform a wide range of missions.

The helicopter can be equipped with weapons, sensors, and rescue tools depending on operational needs.

Its inclusion in the NAF fleet is expected to enhance Nigeria’s tactical advantage and rapid deployment capabilities.

The move is part of a broader strategy to tackle insecurity in the North-East, North-West, and other troubled regions.

Security analysts believe the government must also invest in pilot training, maintenance, and support infrastructure.

Nonetheless, the induction of these helicopters marks a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s ongoing defense reforms.
