Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi

The Obidient Movement has debunked rumours that the Labour Party (LP) candidate during the 2023 presidential election, Mr. Peter Obi, will abandon the party for some coalition.

The Obidient Movement made the denial in a press release issued by the Director of Strategic Communication and Media, Ms. Nana Kazaure, dated May 19, 2025.

The Movement stated categorically that Mr. Obi will remain in Labour Party, against rumours of any coalition.

In the statement entitled “Peter Obi and Coalition… a clarification”, Ms. Kazaure cited a media publication claiming that “Peter Obi has been offered a running mate position to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the new coalition being formed ahead of 2027.

She admitted that a frank and cordial engagements with partners and stakeholders towards a coalition is going on amicably but that Peter Obi accepting a running mate position to Alhaji Abubakar is a far cry.

Kazaure, however, noted that should events warrant such changes, then Peter Obi will make that announcement himself.

The statement reads in full:

“The Obidient Movement has been inundated with calls from our members within and outside the country, including other members of the public, regarding a media publication claiming that our principal, Peter Obi, has been offered a running mate position to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the new coalition being formed ahead of 2027.

“Even though the publication is imaginary to the author, we find it appropriate to react, in view of possible far-reaching misconception, in the public space.

“While frank and cordial engagements with our partners and stakeholders towards a coalition continue amicably, the Obidient Movement would like to state emphatically that there is no truth or basis to the reports whatsoever.

“Without any risk of contradiction, we would like to reiterate that Mr. Obi has maintained that his objective and his involvement in a coalition is to provide a united front against and to tackle issues of bad governance, corruption, hunger, poverty, poor healthcare, out of school children and the myriads of other problems daily afflicting the people of Nigeria.

“We want politics that is progressive, standing firmly with the people and serving the great people of Nigeria and not politics just for the sake of grabbing power.

“At this point in time, Mr Peter Obi remains in the Labour Party, and if ever this changes, he will make that announcement himself.”

Nigerians react: Obi can never be vice to Atiku

Meanwhile, reacting to the coalition rumours, many Nigerians utterly rejected the notion of Peter Obi being vice to Atiku Abubakar.

below are a few reactions:

Cyril Lisbon, @CyrilLisbon1:

If Peter Obi ever becomes a vice or assistant to anybody in the ballot, consider his vision and chapter for Nigerian presidency close for the rest of his life, we all will leave him, abandon him and turn against him…and that’s final…

Justice4Kajurians, @MartynsObot:

This is a vague communities that communicates nothing. Whatever, it is, let it be known to @PeterObi that any ticket that has him as VP to anyone is highly rejected by Obidients especially in the south. Even though, Punch is setting Obidient against Atikulates, we reject it…

Idreeserh, @Nrs_Idreeserh:

Obidients will really be the end of Peter Obi.

If he refuses to join the coalition if offered the vice president and is scared to go against you fanatics, then let him support Bulaba or let contest again on the platform of the labour.

The consequences are;

1. Tinubu will continue until 2031
2. APC will zone it back to the north for another 8 years.

Peter Obi presence in the coalition, be it as vice president or president, is the surest route for Igbo presidency at this present time.

Kendo, @Kendo81326098:

Let me also make it clear, I will NEVER support ATIKU/OBI ticket. Any ticket that does not have PETER OBI as the Presidential candidate is dead on arrival.

Why is ATIKU so desperate to become President? He has been contesting for almost 40 years.

And you think that Tinubu will just fold his hands and watch you take his 8 years EMILOKAN away?

PDP is a disaster. First, Buhari ruled for 8 years and you fielded Atiku, another Northerner to takeover from Buhari. That was a gross error and wickedness I.M.O. Even the gods will not support your agenda.

Second, Tinubu will fight with his last blood to do his 8 years before returning power to the North. Let Atiku wait till 2031. There is no competitor to challenge him.

Third, you all underestimated Peter Obi until he demonstrated his capabilities at the last election, unofficially winning more states than the duo old giants (APC and PDP) despite stealing his votes across states. Now you want him by every means necessary.

Therefore, If Peter Obi is not on the ballot box as the Presidential candidate in the 2027 election, the obidients will take a walk. If Atiku truly wants a better Nigeria, let him be the VP to Peter Obi.

We want a New Nigeria and it’s POssible.

J.MIGHTY, @Greatfuljoseph:

Good then let it be Peter obi/ Atiku… We better not be in power than play second fiddle to people we are better than.

Why should a northener be president when is the turn of the south. Moreover all this regions that have being in power for years are not doing better than the southeast and their people are still not doing better than the people of the southeast.

Obi and Atiku will easily unseat Tinubu but if Atiku won’t give obi the ticket, then let Tinubu continue. You have to understand that obi don’t need Atiku but Atiku needs obi.

Obi can win the election with El-Rufai, Obi can win with Kwakwanso, Obi can win with Saraki. Obi don’t need Atiku. The reason Tinubu is in power and Wike is a tyrant today is because of Atiku’s desperation to be president.

Obi is not desperate, but Atiku is. Atiku should either step aside and support from the side or become a VP to Obi.

Moreover, it’s very clear that Obi presidency will favour the North more than the way Jonathan favoured the north.

We the people of the South East are not desperate for power after all the people that had it for years are not better than us.

All we need is hold our governors responsible to use our allocations and resources for our people. If we unite at state level we can achieve a lot.

Atiku should go rest. Obi can never be vice to anything resembling Atiku.

Rather, let Tinubu continue from 2027.
