FG suspends planned prayer and fasting programme on food security

The Federal Government of Nigeria has indefinitely suspended its three-day prayer and fasting programme aimed at supporting food security initiatives. Initially, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security organized the event, but public criticism forced its cancellation. Consequently, the ministry halted the programme, which was titled “Divine Intervention for Protection and National Development.”
Originally, the sessions were scheduled for June 16, 23, and 30 at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. According to an internal circular dated June 11, senior officials, including directors and desk officers, were invited to participate. However, critics questioned the reliance on spiritual solutions for food security challenges, leading to widespread backlash. As a result, the ministry issued another memo suspending the programme indefinitely.
While the circular described the event as a “solemn prayer session for God’s guidance,” many argued that practical measures were more effective. Subsequently, the ministry’s decision sparked debates on the role of faith in governance. Some supported the integration of spiritual approaches, while others emphasized science, technology, and policy reforms. Nevertheless, the government has yet to issue an official statement explaining the suspension.
Currently, Nigeria faces severe agricultural challenges, including climate change and supply chain disruptions. Therefore, the suspension highlights the tension between spiritual and practical solutions. Moving forward, stakeholders await concrete actions to address food security. Ultimately, this development underscores the need for balanced strategies in national development.
The government’s withdrawal reflects public demand for tangible solutions. Despite the controversy, the debate continues on the best approach to achieving food security. For now, citizens expect more decisive policies to combat rising food prices and farming challenges.
Hence, the suspension serves as a reminder that governance requires both faith and action.
