Delta govt scrambles as flood warnings spark public outrage

The Delta State government has activated its flood emergency response plan following the latest forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which predicts heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across the region.

Delta State is a region located in the southern part of Nigeria, known for its diverse cultures, rich natural resources, and vibrant economy.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the state’s Flood Disaster Management Committee has commenced proactive monitoring of flood-prone zones, particularly in low-lying and coastal communities.

The committee is working closely with local councils, especially in the Warri area, to implement immediate flood preparedness measures aimed at minimising damage and safeguarding lives.

According to government sources, key interventions include the clearing of drainage channels, removal of debris, and desilting of water passageways to prevent blockages during peak rainfall.

Community sensitization campaigns have also been launched to educate residents on safety protocols and evacuation procedures in the event of flash floods.

Local authorities are urging residents in high-risk zones to remain alert and cooperate fully with emergency response teams.

They are also advised to relocate temporarily from areas prone to river overflow, erosion, or structural collapse during prolonged downpours.

The Delta State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) is coordinating logistics and support services in anticipation of potential displacements.

In addition, state health officials have been placed on standby to respond to any outbreaks of waterborne diseases often associated with post-flood conditions.

The state government reiterated its commitment to disaster readiness, noting that lessons from previous flood episodes are shaping its current approach to mitigation and emergency support.

Residents are encouraged to report early signs of flooding, blocked drains, or structural weaknesses to the nearest local authority.

The government has assured the public that every available resource will be deployed to ensure a swift and effective response if flood incidents occur.
