Brasilia, Brazil – Recently, Nigeria took a significant step toward global health collaboration by participating actively in the BRICS Ministers of Health Meeting.

Led by Dr. Iziaq Kunle Salako, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, the delegation engaged meaningfully with other nations.

During the meeting, Nigeria’s representatives emphasized the importance of global partnerships in addressing health challenges.

Consequently, they sought to foster collaboration and share best practices, aiming to improve health outcomes for all nations involved.

Notably, this marked Nigeria’s first participation since joining BRICS as a partner country earlier this year, signaling its growing influence in international health diplomacy.

The high-level gathering united representatives from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and Indonesia, focusing on shared health priorities and stronger cooperation.

With BRICS+ now representing 46% of the world’s population and 25% of its landmass, Nigeria’s inclusion highlights its role in shaping policies that benefit the Global South.

During the discussions, Nigeria proudly presented its health sector reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Consequently, the ministerial declaration aligned with Nigeria’s key goals, such as local vaccine production, AI in healthcare, and universal health coverage.

Additionally, the fight against Non-Communicable Diseases and Neglected Tropical Diseases gained renewed emphasis.

Beyond formal meetings, Nigeria joined a critical session on healthy eating to prevent chronic diseases.

This platform allowed the delegation to showcase its commitment to public health while forging stronger ties with global partners.

Dr. Salako stressed the value of South-South cooperation, particularly with Brazil and China.

“This meeting has unlocked new opportunities for Nigeria’s health sector,” he said.

“We are advancing partnerships that directly support our national priorities.”

A major breakthrough emerged from the Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue, with plans to finalize a health collaboration agreement soon.

Meanwhile, talks with China addressed Nigeria’s power challenges in healthcare and explored phytomedicine development.

The Federal Ministry of Health praised President Tinubu’s diplomatic efforts, which continue to open doors for Nigeria.

“His leadership is key to building alliances that will transform healthcare,” said Alaba Balogun, Ministry spokesperson.

As Nigeria deepens its BRICS+ engagement, the nation remains dedicated to innovative health solutions and global cooperation.

By leveraging these partnerships, Nigeria aims to improve healthcare for its citizens while contributing to worldwide progress.

Through proactive diplomacy and strategic alliances, Nigeria is positioning itself as a leader in global health innovation.

The BRICS meeting not only strengthened international ties but also paved the way for tangible improvements in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

With upcoming agreements and collaborative projects, the future looks promising.

Nigeria’s active role in BRICS+ reflects its commitment to a healthier, more equitable world—one partnership at a time.
