FG rebrands Ministry of Niger Delta Development

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a strong directive to Nigeria’s security forces to intensify the crackdown on Boko Haram insurgents in the Northeast and swiftly end the recurring cycle of violence in Plateau State.

The president’s order comes in the wake of two tragic incidents over the weekend: a female suicide bomber detonated explosives at a local eatery in Konduga, Borno State, killing 24 people, and 13 travellers from Zaria, Kaduna State, were lynched in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State after reportedly stopping to ask for directions.

The group of 31 were en route to Qua’an Pan LGA for a wedding when the attack occurred. Among the victims were the father and brother of the groom.

Their remains were laid to rest at Hayi Muslim Cemetery in Mangu on Sunday.

Describing the Konduga attack as “cowardly” and the Plateau killing as “barbaric,” President Tinubu said such assaults are desperate moves by terrorist elements being cornered by ongoing military operations.

He extended condolences to the families and people of Borno and Kaduna States and directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to offer prompt support to survivors and victims’ families.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president charged Governor Caleb Mutfwang to take “decisive action” and work closely with security operatives to arrest those behind the Plateau killing and ensure such attacks do not recur.

He reiterated that the right to freedom of movement remains sacrosanct and that no individual or group will be allowed to curtail it through violence.

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani condemned the attack on the travellers, calling it “savagery” and demanding immediate justice.

He warned that impunity must no longer be tolerated, and urged the Plateau State Government to take charge of the situation.

Sani pledged to personally monitor the investigation, while calling for calm among Kaduna residents.

In response, Governor Mutfwang constituted a high-level committee to visit Kaduna for a condolence visit.

He also visited the scene of the attack and instructed hospitals in Mangu to provide optimal care for the injured at the government’s expense.

Mutfwang warned against reprisal attacks and jungle justice, and condemned fresh violence reported in Bokkos, Riyom, Barkin Ladi, and Bassa LGAs.

President Tinubu also extended condolences to victims of a Saturday explosion at a scrap metal factory in Kano which left five dead and ten injured.

He stressed the need for workplace safety and ordered relevant agencies to investigate the incident thoroughly.

The government has assured Nigerians that all perpetrators will be brought to justice.
